No, the usb port is primarily used only for a compatible usb printer. You need an ethernet equipped modem to connect to any router, AX or others.

Phew thanks. I have bought my mother a new I book for
Xmas and am migrating from one ISP to another. The
present one has an adsl modem with USB.and the new
ISP expects the service ro use that same modem.
What's the best thing to do get an ethernet router or
new modem, router is cheper I guess?

An ethernet ADSL modem will do fine if you have an Airport Express.

Otherwise a combined ADSL Modem Wireless Router may be a better choice.

Hi ifelix,
Why would I need a combined wireless router if I want to use my new Airport Express base to broadcast the adsl broadband?

Is there any particular benefit?

Do they work with Mac's OK?

If so and the cost comparison between wireless combined and ordinary router is negligable which would you recommend?

I may keep the Express for myself to improve my Extreme wi fi network if the combined is a better route.

Thx for your attention

It was not clear if you had an Airport Express or not.

As you have an Airport Express, buying another wireless router is not necessary.

Thanks, sorry I was'nt misinterpreting.
It may be better to get a combined wireless router for my mother being an elderly silver surfer but not an enthusiast. Less objects!
I wanted to establish if all wireless equipment works with all platforms now or whether its better to stick with the appropriate brand.
Thanks again for valuable advice.

In theory any wifi certified client can connect to any wifi certified wireless router or access point.

From my own exeperience I have a mix of manufacturers and they do connect.

Having said that each has their own little issues which can prove a headache at times.
