final cut pro importing problems

I have the new final cut pro on my mac and I just imported some video from my flip camera to edit my movie. The footage is available and works until i unplug my flip. After my flip is unplugged it says media offline and only when I plug my flip back in the footage becomes available again. *How can I fix this?*

mac, Mac OS X (10.6.5)

You need to transfer the video files to your computer hard drive and then use those files in FCP.

Sorry, this is incorrect. Those camera's shoot a highly compressed h.264 MP4 files. FCP will not work with h.264 or MP4. You are correct that they need to be moved from the camera to an external hard drive.

To the OP: Convert the files into ProRes (LT) using MPEG Steamclip. Those files will then work in FCP.

Or you can use Compressor. Create a custom preset for ProResLT - pass through the video size and frame rate. Convert the audio to 48khz. If you have a MacPro, set up a quick cluster and have this done by the time you finish your first beverage.

fwiw - I really don't understand why all these people go to mpeg streamclip which has a ridiculously complex interface, no technical support (and so on) when Compressor will do all this more easily and leverage the computing resources available.

I guess people want to do things the hard way .

shrug.
