ipod touch 3rd gen 8gb wont restore after attempt to update

I went to charge my ipod touch and itunes asked if I wanted to update so naturally I clicked yes. Upon doing so its only went but so far before it became corrupted and said the ipod needs to come out of restore mode. I click the option to restore to my old settings and it won't budge. Even when I disconnect ipod and/or hold the power key the adapted picture still comes up and it won't turn off. Someone please help!!
