Download folder in dock how to empty or clear?

Every time I download something, it appears in the "folder" in my dock. I really don't need them so I wondered how I clear that folder. I know how to "clear" the little download window of things I'm downloading when it appears on my monitor, but not how to clear the downloads in my dock. Thank you in advance for your help!

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Control-click it, open it, and move the files inside as desired.

Niel,
when you say "control-click" does that mean click on it in my dock? When I do, a huge window appears on my screen with probably 100 downloads. I want to clear it so it's empty not move them around.

Click on it while holding down the Control key on the keyboard.

Thanks Neil! I did that and saw my options. I'm sorry for asking another question but this is all new to me. If I remove it from the dock, will it disappear? Those are just pictures to show me what I've downloaded right? They're not the actual downloads, are they? I appreciate your help very much.

What you see in the folder are the actual downloads. Dragging them to the Trash and emptying them will delete them. Moving them otherwise won't.

Uh oh Neil... I held my control key down and clicked on the "remove" from the dock and now my download folder in the dock has disappeared. Will a new one appear in my dock when I download something new? The download folder that disappeared had photos and documents that were placed in iPhoto and in other folders on my computer. I haven't looked yet to see if they're gone. I didn't drag the folder to trash, it just disappeared when I clicked on "remove from dock". Are they still on my computer? Thank you!!

Click on the item in the Finder's sidebar with the house icon and drag the Downloads folder back. The Dock icon is only a shortcut.

I drag the documents folder in the house icon area, back to the dock and drop it there? Sorry for all the questions!!

Drag the Downloads folder there, or any other folder you want in the Dock. However, you can't drag other shortcuts such as icons in the sidebar there.
