any way to turn off the pop up text (showing the http address) when you hover over a link? this "feature" is killing me.

You mean the Tooltips?

Safari 4 and 5 has a hidden preference to disable tooltips. To disable tooltips in Safari, open up the Terminal application (in the Applications/Utilities folder) and paste the following line:

defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitShowsURLsInToolTips 0

Then press enter. You will need to quit and restart Safari for changes to take effect. Repeat with a 1 at the end instead of a 0 to reverse this.

This known to work in both Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard.
