HP PSC 1350 All-In-One won't install on Macbook Pro, PLEASE HELP!! :(

Hi all

I know this has been covered before, but I've done SO many Google searches I just can't think of any other keyword combinations so I'm hoping someone can advise.

I'm running the latest version of OS X, and when I first plugged in the printer via USB, it auto-detected, searched for and installed drivers, after which the printer showed up under Print & Fax, but as a 1300 and not a 1350.

When I proceeded to print from MS Word, the job showed up in the print queue, but it didn't print, and when I opened up the print queue it said the printer was idle - but it WASN'T!

So I proceeded to 'reset the printing system.' After this, I can't even add the printer! Print & Fax refuses to even REGISTER that the printer is connected...

I'm about to pull my hair out - I've banged my head against the wall for SO long trying to make this work, first through a network with my Windows XP PC, and now via a direct connection via USB after rearranging my WHOLE office... If someone could advise I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks,
Eye.

Go to http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=219&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw _lang=&product=306888#N214 and download the requisite drivers and updates for your printer. Install them in sequence and, when finished, open Print & Fax, CONTROL-click in the Printers window and reset the printing system, click on the plus sign and readd your printer. When that's finished, quit the prefPane, launch Software Update, and install any HP Driver updates that show up. If none, manually download HP update 2.5.2 from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907 and install it, repair permissions, and restart.

I had that exact model MFD. You should know two things:

1 it is no longer fully supported. It reports as a 1300 and often doesn't work very well. You can print, after a fashion, using HP's official drivers, but you will get much better results (and drivers which actually see the **** MFD!) from drivers available at the HPIJS Project. <http://www.linuxfoundation.org/collaborate/workgroups/openprinting/macosx/hpij s%23Printers>. The drivers there are mostly developed by HP employees but are NOT offered on HP's site and are NOT given to Apple by HP to be included in printer driver updates. You guess as to why this is, given that they behave much better than HP's official drivers and have since Tiger, is as good as mine. Note that installing the HPIJS drivers turns your MFD into a PostScript (clone) device! Your output is noticeably superior to that produced by the official drivers, and your level of control over that output is increased. (It's also slower, and the PSC1350 was never fast...)

2 while you can print from the PSC1350, you cannot scan. Not under either Leopard or Snow Leopard. VueScan may support the PSC1350 now, I don't know, I bailed a long time ago. I do know that the HP scan software breaks, hard, under Leopard and will not install in Snow Leopard. Note that HP has (finally!) released print drivers for the PSC1350 so that you can print from Leopard and Snow Leopard; when Leopard came out, the only way to print using that device was was to use the HPIJS drivers... and for the first 2-3 months after Leopard arrived, the version of GhostScript that the HPIJS drivers used was broken on Leopard, so it wasn't possible to print at all. My PSC1350 was a paperweight. When I contacted HP's tech support they said in so many words that the MFD was no longer supported either under Leopard or Vista and that I should either use older OSes or get a new printer. I did. I got a Brother. Brother USA Sales should send HP Tech Support flowers.

HP's software for this device is profoundly broken.
