epson printer utility

What is the latest version of the epson printer utility? I have 1.84 and it is bombing out everytime i try to use it. I see other people have the same problems. Is there a newer version or another program that will allow me to clean the heads of my printer?

You'd think epson.com would have something useful, but it doesn't. They haven't updated their drivers for this printer for OS10.4.

What really chaps my hide is that Apple removed the head-cleaning and ink-checking functionality from Simple Text with 10.4. Yes, and I do mean Simple Text and not Text Edit. Even when I boot into OS9 it's not there anymore. I can't think of any reason for them to do this other than that Epson's paying them off, hoping to sell more printers.

I was really hoping for some words of wisdom... I just installed the OS 10.4 and I no longer can find my Epson printer anywhere in my computer, not even the Epson utility. I was using my printer up till the other day with my previous version of OS 10.3 and now there's nothing. I also ran into he same problem, not only has Epson not updated to 10.4 compatible version, the previous driver that worked with OS 10 has disappeared, now the drivers are only compatible up until OS 9. something. Am I going to buy a whole new printer now?!?

Well, to correctly answer your question without beating around the bush or speculating.. We would need the following.

What Printer do you have
What is the exact version of 10.4 you have

Most likly you will just need to do a removal and re install of the Epson folder and some extra default printing files. There are so many differences between 10.4.2 to 10.4.5 printing system, and im sure some new ones will arise for 10.4.6.

Ok to get your C84 working

Full removal and uninstall

1) Open MacHD>Library>Printers> Take the Epson Folder and throw it in the trash
2) Now, click on the Blue Apple>> System preferences >> Print and Fax >> click the + below >> Click PRINTER SETUP UTILITY on the top and select RESET PRINTING SYSTEM
**this will reset your printing system and remove any default plist files that usually conflict with upgrading to 10.4.4 10.4.5 10.4.6**
3) Now close all the windows and click on FILE and select FIND
*Search for com.apple.print and trash the files that appear, there should be 2 or 3 files.
4) Restart your computer and empty the trash
5) Now re install the latest driver for your printer off the Epson website.. **Make sure you download the corresponding driver, INTEL BASED or NON INTEL BASED** Some label up to 10.3 they are ok for 10.4 even if not listed.
6)Now click on your blue apple >> System Preferences >> Print and Fax >> click the + >> now in the printer browser screen you should see your printer click it and click ADD on the bottom right.** There is no need to go to MORE PRINTERS Since Mac changed the printing system on 10.4.5 **

Now everything should work.

I wonder if this long complicated procedure would work for my epson photo 950.? The printer works ( using Gimp print beta 2.) but the epson printer utility freezes and refuses to force quit until i restart. I have no way of checking ink levels or head cleaning. I can only wait until the print comes out lacking a colour!
I can't believe epson have not updated their utility. the apple "levels" icon is grayed out on the printer dialogue box. i have downloaded latest drivers which seem to have been in the development stage now for ever - why is this? grr! Epson. Grrr! If i have to change my printer, which is not so old it won't be to another Epson.

The easiest thing to do is:

1. Open MacHD>Library>Printers> Take the Epson Folder and throw it in the trash.

2. Reinstall the Epson printer drivers from your Tiger DVD, not the Epson web site. Unless you have a new Epson printer introduced after Tiger, the newest drivers are only on the Tiger DVD. You don't need Pacifist to extract the file either, it's easy to do from the Tiger DVD.

3. Then add the printer as a USB printer. Done.

Note: The heads can be cleaned by just holding down the button on the front of the printer for about 2-3 seconds. And, the Epson Printer Utility won't be available if your printer is hooked to the USB port on an Airport Extreme Base Station or an Airport Express. It has to be hooked to one of the computers USB ports.

The Epson 2200 drivers on Mac have been buggy for years . .. the only way I have been able to get it to work properly & consistently is controlling via Lightroom's print module

The Epson 2200 is primarily a photo printer , does not work as a photo printer on airport .. only as a standard text printer a job it does lack luster ..

The Epson 2200 has multiple drivers , seven drivers in fact .. borderless , roll paper , roll paper borderless .. etc .....

Something has happened to Epson drivers in conjunction to the 10.4.6 update .. both my printer a Epson 2200 printer & Epson 2450 scanner are unavailable getting a "could not complete the import command because there is no scanner installed " for the scanner from CS2 & "jobs stopped " from Epson borderless driver when I try to print anything ...

this is bit off the original topic but thought it might help some of the above posters .. will post question as a seperat topic ...
