VPN fails to restart after sleep

Same issue here. No VPN connectivity when the laptop has been in standby mode, have to reboot for it to create a connection. Would love to know how to manually restart the VPN client / service!

It happens to me after VPN has been connected for a few days and then I lose the connection, and when trying to reconnect I get the same error message.

I have the same problem. I am trying to raise a problem using Radar, but the components and versions are completely opaque, so I've had to email devbugs@apple.com.

Same issue. Also happens when the VPN service randomly drops. Sometimes, after a random (long) period, I can re-connect.

In the failed state, I also cannot connect to the same VPN server with the Cisco VPN client as well. "Error -28 sending packet."

Is there a way to restart the in-built VPN client?

I've just done some more digging, in the failed state, my wireless interface does not emit any packet when trying to setup the VPN.

I just get the scrolling "Connecting..." display in the top menu bar and then the error:

"VPN Connection
A configuration error occurred. Verify your settings and try reconnecting."

Which is very handy, since it was working just fine till the vpn dropped.

In the vpn settings, click "advanced" and then check the "use verbose logging" option, and when the problem occurs again check the system logs for errors and post them here.

I dont have the option to do any logging in the OSX network settings panel.

More digging:
sudo launchctl stop com.apple.racoon
sudo launchctl start com.apple.racoon

Restarting the service using the above commands doesnt work.

Same problem here. Was quite surprised that this has slipped through apple for so long.

Just picked up a macbook pro 17, had to do two things to make this work with 10.6.6...

1) Click on keychain_access -> System (keychain) -> IPSec Shared Secret
Click on "Access Control" tab button
select radio button: Allow all applications to access this item

2) sudo launchctl stop com.apple.racoon
sudo launchctl start com.apple.racoon

Reconnecting then worked.

IMPORTANT: I noticed that it is still flaky making connections.
It seems that doing a stop/start on racoon fixes the problem.

(I'm not convinced on the causality with this; would prefer apple folks to offer up a real solution.)

Yes.. I don't like the "allow all apps access" solution either.
Fwiw, I tried the "allow all apps access" first, which cleared out the blessed apps list. Ugh.
I suppose removing/adding the vpn again would get the list back, then configd (?) could be added.

What i'm seeing after sleep is that VPN fails to re-connect. Making it reconnect by selecting the appropriate VPN setting from the menu bar (you can enable this by selecting the Show VPN status in menu bar options in the VPN settings panel in System preferences).

Have you tried that? Does that work for you?

Same issue here with 10.6.6. Though it happened without even going to sleep. I just disconnected my vpn and then tried to connect to a different vpn profile.

Using these commands did help for me:

sudo launchctl stop com.apple.racoon
sudo launchctl start com.apple.racoon
