Help you are my last resort! Modem/router connect problem 3Com 3crwd100A-72

I can't connect the 3crwd100A-72 to my karoo broadband provided by Kingston Communications in Hull (major monopoly) and i'm using a Mac on 10.4 Tiger via ethernet.

I got a shoddy speedtouch USB modem with the broadband but it cuts out all the time and i need to hook up 2 other computers in my house. I get good connection with speedtouch so its not my ISP, it must be the 3com thing but its instructions are crap and suited to PC's not Mac's with firmwire upgrades that require a PC and an existing working internet connection through the router which i can't get including ability to access router set up page on browser which i can't.

I 've connected everything properly and all the correct LEDS work like Sync, WLAN and the LAN port. The ethernet is connected too but get no online signal LED and get an amber warning colour in my network status for the set up which says 'ethernet conection present but static IP asigned and no internet. In the support PDF it says:-

Auto-IP Addressing Network: devices use automatic IP addressing if they are configured to acquire an address using DHCP but are unable to contact a DHCP server.

Automatic IP addressing is a scheme where devices allocate themselves
Device IP Address Subnet Mask
PC 1 192.168.100.8 255.255.0.0

APPENDIX A: IP ADDRESSING
an IP address at random from the industry standard subnet of
169.254.x.x (with a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0). If two devices allocate
themselves the same address, the conflict.

I get the 169.254.x.x ip address which is wrong i think.

When i open web browser it can't connect and i get 'ethernet port active but static IP address and may not be able to access internet' message and an amber status. I'm current using a speedtouch USB modem which i hate! Help!

i'm rambling but am sooo tired and should give up and go to bed. I've gone insane!
