Reinstall DVD player

Hi.

I mistakenly deleted the DVD player off of my machine and cannot figure out how to get it reinstalled. I've searched the forums for a number of solutions and none are working. I've tried restarting with the install DVD in, placing the DVD in after restarting, downloading Pacifist and trying to find the files... all give me nothing. The install DVD simply whirs a bit then ejects itself.

I feel like I'm in an unending circle - trying to load a DVD player from a DVD that can't play without a DVD player - ugh.

Are there any other options? Thanks in advance.

Ah! The proverbial missing information. AFAICT, you're not looking in the right place. There's a separate DVDPlayer.pkg on the SL installer. You can run this command in the Terminal, which opens up the Packages folder, and drag the DVDPlayer.pkg onto Pacifist:

*open /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ DVD/System/Installation/Packages/*

Then, extract the DVD Player.app.

No go. Terminal says the file does not exist: "The file /Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Installation/Packages does not exist."

The DVD whirs, then ejects itself with nothing happening. I tried the command before putting the DVD in the drive and after, with it "whirring". Same result both times.

Thanks to everyone for trying to help. After talking with a friend of mine, we are thinking it is actually a hardware issue instead of software. The slot won't recognize any disk - DVD or otherwise (i.e., iTunes does not register that a CD is in). I have an appointment at the local apple store for this weekend.

Again, thanks to all. I appreciate your time and advice.
