Help - iPhone crashed for no reason, stuck on apple logo now this !

"Iphone cannot be restored at this time because the iPhone software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable"

This is ridiculous. Ive been trying for hours now !

My 3GS keeps crashing with the apple logo after about 4 min on a call-
I have updated the software twice and completed a factory reset
It was fine before the software updates -but you cant go back to a version that worked

Whats the deal with the server being down though ? There is a work around where you disconnect from the net as it tries to contact the server but that doesnt work now either
