Photos lost from iphone after sync

I have just completed first sync on new iph4 from prev iphone. All went well- all apps, songs and photos from previous iphone now on new one. However all notes, contacts and photos taken on new iphone before sync are now missing.
Is there any way to retrieve them?

laptop, iOS 4, windows xp

As no-one could give me an answer I went to Apple shop and they advise "Too bad, so sad. Content lost permanently" So under no circumstances use the new phone until you have backed up the content from your old because you will lose any new contacts, photos or memos/notes.
