If I dropped an iPad?

I was just wondering when would I notice the damage, right away? or would a crack appear later? Another question is just how durable is the iPad if its in a case?

I was just wondering what the durability of iPads were in general.

In general usage, durability of iPads is excellent. However, general usage does not include being dropped, thrown, drowned, cooked, fed to alligators or other exceptional usages.

The iPad is not a ruggedized computer, but is built to withstand normal use by a normal person who takes normal care of their expensive electronics gadgets.

My advice would be to simply not drop it onto any hard surface.

It really depends what type of surface you drop it on and from what height. It may also depend on what edge/face it landed. A concrete or tiled floor would be the worst situation.

Mine has been knocked off a table onto a carpet floor a couple of time with no damage. It was not in my leather case at the time. I use a fairly thick leather case which might give an extra degree of protection.

As with all expensive electronic gadgets you should ensure it is added to/covered by your household insurance policy for complete protection.

Apple's warranty does not cover you for accidental damage, loss or theft. Bear in mind 'loss' is always a dubious one with insurance companies 😟

****! Maybe that was the reason of the cracking sounds when my alligator was chewing his brand new iPad 64GB. Now I'll have to wait and check how it comes from the other end of my tiny pet! 😀

Now, talking seriously, one piece of advice I can give you is: be careful where you store it. Usually, the worst accidents happen when gadgets are not in use, so people in your house/office are not paying attention to your expensive equipment. Regular people usually take care when using things like an iPad, reducing the damage risks.

Cheers.

Dropping electronic devices, consumer grade devices that is, is not considered a desirable thing to do. Damage will depend on how far they dropped, how they landed, and so forth. Failure may be cracks in the screen, parts that cease to function, dents, etc.

Cases will have varying degrees of protection. And again, a lot depends on how the unit hits/lands. Some cases offer more protection than others. Some have pointed out the annoying edges of the Apple iPad case actually offer a fair amount of shock protection if the iPad lands on-edge.

In any case, unless you are being paid, and get the iPad for free, doing destructive testing his not the best idea. And as others have said, Apple's warranty does not cover damage of this nature.
