iPhone 4 suddenly dead, why did it happen?

Yesterday I locked my iPhone and it wouldn't wake up, I found here somwehere that if I hold home + lock button it would reset, and it worked.
It's working fine all day now, but I'm worried if it happens again.

But my question is, why did it happen?
Is it software (iOS crash) or hardware issue?

I did a little research on this on teh internet, and it turns out that this is common problem, so I'm wondering if maybe it's bug that iOS update will fix that or something.

One more question, I've read that you can get iPhone replacement in first 30 days, so I'm worried if it doesn't crash next 3 weeks, and begins to crash after...

Really weird bug, Apple should have written some instructions and explanation for this...

Certainly not a common problem reported here, and finding a few posts on the internet out of multiple millions of iPhones sold does not make a problem common.

No such problem with my iPhone 4 - not once during the last 6 months.

You can return an iPhone for payment credit within the first 30 days after the purchase date. If the retail sales box is not opened, you will recieve full payment credit. If the box is opened, there will be a 10% restocking fee deducted from the payment credit.

Once again, the iPhone includes a one year warranty which begins on the purchase date.

i had the same problem today, i was watching a video, then put the lock on and put it my pocket. Then 5 min after it was "dead" nothing seemed to be "alive" not even the mute/unmute "switch", then i found this topic and did the reset.
and now every thing is back in order, no data lost or anything. it just turned it self completely off whit out me doing any thing...

I had the same problem today while the battery was full . I connected the phone to the charger and pressed the power and Home button simultaneously . The problem was solved but i wanted to know if it had anything to do with the apps I downloaded last night or not?! I hadn't experienced this before but i think as apps don't close and run in background, opening many apps might've caused such problems.

Thanks for posting this. Same thing happended to me today. I followed the tip to fix & it's now working, but.... presume Apple want to know it's happening. Battery for me was 50%. I turned it off (sleep) & next time I tried to turn it on (30 minutes latter) - it didn't turn on basically a dead apple iPhone - I held down the off/home buttons till it fired up again. Only thing of note was it prompted to do a "Carrier settings update" a few days ago - which I did. (iPhone 4S v5.0.1 (9A405) running on Optus network in Australia)
