Facetime Failed!! plz read

so i just bought this ipod touch 4g 8 gig and i bought it for a specific reason and thats to talk to my girlfriend who is moving to mexico for a couple of months and thought it would be a big plus to have this. she has the same ipod model as me. now she has internet connection over wifi at her house but i dont know if it might be strong enough for facetime. now my problem. she can all me but everytime i pick up it says unable to connect and everytime i try calling her it says "Facetime Failed" "person is not avalible for facetime" and it says that right away, it has no time to ring or nothing. just i need help so i can build this relationship easier.
