Unable to install iTunes on Windows 7 64 Bit

When I try to install iTunes 64 bit on my Windows 7 computer using the latest installer from Apple's website, I get the following error:

*An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC80.CRT,version="8.0.50727.4053",type="win32",publicKeyToken="1fc8b 3b9a1e18e3b",processorArchitecture="x86". Please refer to Help and Support for more information. HRESULT: 0x80070002*

The installation finishes, but when I run iTunes it says:

*Apple Application Support was not found.*
*Apple Application Support is required to run iTunes. Please uninstall iTunes, then install iTunes again.*
*Error 2 (Windows error 2)*

I have tried:
* Uninstall all Apple-related software, including Bonjour, Quicktime, and Automatic Updater.
* Clear out temp folder
* Running the install as administrator
* Extracting the .msi files and running them separately

Any ideas?

Homebuilt, Windows 7

IT appears that everyone has a different issue with this Win7 Software "side-by-Side" issue.
I suggest the following:
1. Uninstall ANY itunes software (if installed).
2. Update ALL win7 patches and updates.
3. Attempt to install iTunes again.

If the installation fails, LOOK at your Event Log in Win7. This should give clues as to which files/modules, etc., are the culprits.

Most of the OP suggests a Visual C update/patch issue, but once software installs are attempted, it can be cumbersome to backtrack.

Please check back and let me know if you've had any luck resolving the issues..

Here is a solution that worked for a user who also had a problem with iTunes Software Support. This thread was for a win32 version, but Maybe this is the problem for both of you?:
IT appears that AppleApplicationSupport.msi, is not opening and installing properly.

Download and SAVE iTunesSetup.exe, where you can find it.
Then:
1. Download and install WinRAR.
2. Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe icon and choose "Open with WinRAR".
3. Once the EXE is opened in WinRAR, double-click AppleApplicationSupport.msi and when the installer window is open choose "Repair".
4. Done! You can now run iTunes normally. 🙂

Here is a link to that fairly lengthy thread.. http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2151777&tstart=-1

OP checking in --

I have tried all the suggestions in this thread to no avail. Some observations to make:

I had 1 VC++ 2005 and 2 VC++ 2008 redists installed on my computer. I uninstalled all of them. At that point, I was still unable to install iTunes. I tried to install the original VC++ 2005 redist, but I got a similar error to what I posted above (strange). I was able to install the VC++ 2005 update posted earlier in the thread without difficulty, however.

I am still trying to probe what the underlying issue is. If I can't resolve it, I will eventually reformat and start over.
