Display problem - can't reduce magnification of display or move around

My iPad was working fine when all of a sudden the icons became very large and I can't move around the screen. There is no response to anything I do on the screen. It's as if the magnification is set very high, and nothing I do reduces it. When I reset, it restarts, but I can't even get at the slider at the bottom to unlock it, so it shuts down after a few seconds. I was able to sync. This is VERY frustrating, as the iPad is brand new.

Once you get back to normal settings and the iPad seems to working OK, try a hard reset by pressing and holding down on the sleep button at the top of the iPad while holding down on the home button at the bottom, until the Apple logo appears and the iPad restarts.

This can clear up bizarre iPad behavior.

The double tap zoom is how the iPad works. See Dave Brewer's post above and this may help as well.

In the meantime I seem to have cleared it by tapping on the screen to get it to go back to the default magnification. I still don't understand why it didn't respond at all when the magnification was set very high.

With Zoom enabled, it is a three finger double tap, hold then drag down to zoom out (drag up to zoom in).
Three finger single tap and hold to drag the screen, not just the window.
Note that this is not the standard zoom on text or pix. It zooms the entire screen (notice the very top bar with iPad and time and battery go away).
