Using Disk Utility’s “Restore” function

The internal hard drive on my iMac (Intel iMac 27" 2.66 GHz Quad Core i5) crashed. I used SuperDuper (v 2.6.2 v87) to make a copy of the internal hard drive to an external hard drive in the past. I am now trying to use Disk Utility on my Apple iMac DVD (Version 11.5 (298)) to restore my internal hard drive from this external backup.

The good copy of my internal hard drive is on an encrypted disk image (made using AES and Disk Utility) on the external hard drive. I cannot seem to find a way to get Disk Utility’s “Restore” function to recognize it, i.e., use this encrypted disk image as a source.

Specifically, I boot my iMac from the supplied Apple DVD (Mac OS X Install 230.1.1 (257)). I choose the “Restore” tab in Disk Utility, then go to the “Source” line and click the “Image” button. I can then select the encrypted disk image file, but when I try the actual “Restore” procedure I get an error that reads “RESTORE FAILURE Could not validate source – internal error”.

If this Restore is not possible, I can use SuperDuper to copy the expanded encrypted disk image to it’s own partition on the external hard drive and Restore from there. However, is there a more elegant, efficient, solution, where I can use Disk Utility and Restore directly from the encrypted disk image?

Thank you very much!
