WiFi dropping connection (dlink DIR 301)

Hi,

I recently recieved an ipad (16gb 3g) and I'm having problems with WiFi. I'm using a dlink DIR-301 router and the connection for the ipad is dropped after approx. 5 min of using the internet. I have an iphone 4 which works without any problems also a macbook I use works fine, so there's only issues with the ipad.

I updated the routers firmware and tried to reset the router and changed to wpa/wpa2 security, and still no help. Ipad connection still goes out after about 5 min of use and i have to turn off wifi access and reconnect to my network to regain an internet connection. An extremely annoying problem, any ideas on what i can do?

Hi Julius, welcome to the Apple Discussions.

Have you tried the usual suggestions of turning the iPad power off and then back on? If that doesn't work, reset the iPad network settings? If that doesn't work a hard reset; hold both the sleep and home buttons until the Apple logo appears and it reboots?

Since you have worked on the router end, when you did the firmware upgrade, did you then do a complete power down and power up on the router?

It is probably best to let the router auto-select. However, take a look at the networks you are picking up and their signal strength, shown in Settings > Wifi > choose network, or if you have a computer look at the possible connections, both will show you networks and signal strength.

If there are networks with very strong signals, you might take a shot at selecting a channel such as 11 which is in the upper end and see what happens.

Well, Here we go I am running a dlink DIR-601 and the wireless will cut out at any given point. I have to power cycle the router in order for it to come back up. When I power cycle it has to be at least 5-10 min of wait time and sometimes that does not even work. When it cuts out it can still see the dlink ssid however it says unable to join the network. I have tried updating the fireware on the router. I have tried setting the router WPA only with Tkip only. There is also an issue that sometimes it says that I am connected in the settings however in the top left I do not have WIFI bars and it will not give me access. APPLE YOU HAVE KNOW IDEA HOW FRUSTRATING THIS IS!!!!!!

Hi,
I have tried several channels, currently on ch6 and i can't see any signifant improvement. Sometimes i can go 30min without being dropped, but at other times i may be disconnected from wifi twice within 15min. When dropped i disconnect from wifi and reconnect aftet which the connection starts to work again. Its very annoying really and i am not sure what else i can try to do. The wifi icon always shows a strong signal, so i really do not know what the issue is.

Hi Julius,

Welcome back even though it is not for a happy response like "It works". Have you tried updating the router firmware? At least rule out the router end of the issue. Many routers, those more than a year old, may not be up-to-date with the IEEE 802.11 standard that was adopted in October 2009. So if you haven't recently, login to the router admin account and see if there are any updates to the firmware. If there are, force update, reboot the router and see what the result is. You may have to reinstall the security settings on the router after doing that.
