You can re-download apps for free:
A list of apps you bought is in your iTunes Account purchase history:
Transfer apps bought on your iPad via *iTunes > File > Transfer purchases*
Backup apps by following these directions:
If you login to your iTunes account on your computer then you can look through your purchase history - when you've found the ones that are now missing you should be able to re-download them for free (assuming that they are still in the store)

I have the same problem. Used Garageband extensively to scribblepad a whole lot of tunes. Lost all my apps and my tunes. Went into my apple account and non of the apps have installed in them and have their price showing. Does this mean a) i have lost all my apps and have to rebuy them and b0 lost all my tunes???
My iPad came with a demo package including GarageBand, Pages, Numbers, Keynote. To get it out of demo mode, however, I followed instructions to reset and install as new. After restart, I found these apps missing (I had assumed they simply came with the new iPad!). Since I never bought them, there is no history in App Store nor in iTunes.
I'd really like to know if there is any way I could get them back that does not involve paying for them again....?
Thanks in advance!
