Lost apps...how to recover

Synced my ipad and lost about 12 apps. Unfortunately, I didn't have a backup (no way to backup that I could find) so I'm left with a fraction of my apps. Does ITunes have a list of apps bought by a person? And is there anyway to recover lost apps from ITunes or do I have to buy them all over again?

IPad, iOS 4

You can re-download apps for free:

A list of apps you bought is in your iTunes Account purchase history:

Transfer apps bought on your iPad via *iTunes > File > Transfer purchases*

Backup apps by following these directions:

My iPad came with a demo package including GarageBand, Pages, Numbers, Keynote. To get it out of demo mode, however, I followed instructions to reset and install as new. After restart, I found these apps missing (I had assumed they simply came with the new iPad!). Since I never bought them, there is no history in App Store nor in iTunes.

I'd really like to know if there is any way I could get them back that does not involve paying for them again....?

Thanks in advance!

Anton.
