Itunes gift cards in Mac App store?

I received an itunes gift card for Christmas. I'm waiting to add it to my account to see if I can use it in or add it to the Mac App Store. Is that possible? Also, can the balance in itunes apply to both stores or will it be one big store after implementation? Thank you for your help.

The Mac App Store is now active and it does use the same account, and therefore the same credit balance, as the iTunes Store. It appears, though, that you have to enter payment information in the form of a credit card or PayPal (in the US) account to purchase, even though you have a credit balance. There is no "none" option that allows you to use only a prepaid card. That's the way it's working for me, anyway. I have not entered in a CC and tried to purchase something to see if it does indeed draw from my credit balance.

Regards.

I've gone in there and added my gift card through the mac app store and made a purchase. It didn't ask me for a credit card I think because I have that already setup. It took from my balance I'm assuming because the install started after it asked for my password-just as it does for my iPod touch.

It looks like, based on my recent purchases in both iTunes and the App Store, that something "hinky"
is going on - I need to contact Apple to confirm. The other day (before App Store), I had $22+ in my
iTunes account, and my credit card was charged for the 3 apps I bought from the App Store. Today, I
seem to have $0 in my iTunes account. :^( Nothing is displayed in the area where it used to show the
balance remaining, not even $0.00 - ??

If my credit card was charged [(the price of the 3 apps) - $22], that would make sense. But it looks
like I just lost $22 . . . :^(

Anybody have ideas about what might be going on? Thanks . . .

You can't, not directly. Whether this will ever change I don't know, but this has been the case since the iTunes Store was first opened.

The customer service rep thought the only way (at this time) was to buy an iTunes Gift Card with the Apple Store Gift Card, and have it shipped to me and that would work.

The rep was correct. Apple Store gift cards cannot be used in the iTunes Store nor Mac App Store (they use the same accounts and payment systems, which the Apple Stores are not tied into). If you want to buy Mac App Store or iTunes Store content, you would have to use your Apple Store gift card to purchase an iTunes card.

Mugwumper, I'd suggest you start a new topic with your issue (use the "Post a new topic" link at the top of each main topic page). It's generally better to ask a question as a new topic rather than as a reply in someone else's thread. It's more courteous to the original poster, and is more likely to get your question the attention it deserves.

Regards.

Yes: "When you give iTunes Gift Cards, your lucky recipients can shop for anything we sell on the iTunes Store, App Store, iBookstore, and Mac App Store. No matter which denomination, color, or theme you choose, any iTunes Gift Card can be used for music, movies, TV shows, apps, games, and books. You can include a personal message with your gift, and you always get free shipping."
