OS X Server 10.6 and a linux NUT client

I have a Mac Mini Server, a SME (CentOS 4) server, and one APC SAU1500 UPS.

I would like to have one of the servers be a client and one be the UPS master. For example, connect the Mac Mini to the UPS and have the CentOS box poll the Mac Mini to see if a controlled shutdown is necessary.

With NUT, you can configure a given machine to poll the UPS (master) or poll another server (client). I found a lot of links for installing NUT on Mac OS X circa 2007, but it seems a waste to install NUT given a UPS module is part of the 10.6 distro.

Does anyone know of a way to set up a Mac OS X Server as either master or client?

It would be great if I could simply configure the CentOS box to be a nut-client and point it at the Mac Mini.

Mac OS X (10.6.5), and basically all the mac and linux stuff I can handle.

Thank you, sjdavie, for the response. I read through the nut documentation.

I learned that there is a similar program, apcupsd, that handles the task plus provides a simple web page for statistics. This deamon can be installed on *nix and there is a Mac package too.

One benefit of apcupsd is that the "slave" machines do not have to be registered to with the "master". The master simply allows polling by slaves. This arrangement seemed to be a bit easier to configure than the other options.

I installed apcupsd on the two machines and, so far, it is working as desired.
