Wifi connection keeps dropping - Any ideas?

Hello!

We've just bought two last generation iPod Touchs (which we updated with the new iOS 4.2.1), and we can't seem to maintain a stable WiFi connection on either of them - they keep dropping the WiFi connection. Since we are also operating two 3rd generation iPod Touchs (also updated to the last version of the iOS) on the same WiFi network, and neither of these are having that problem, we're leaning towards a problem either with the 4G units themselves (a faulty batch) or a problem with that generation.
Anyone have the same problem? If so, have you found a way around it?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Cheers!

How is this a router problem if other wifi devices work properly?
I have this same issue on my iPod Touch 2G 8GB.
It works for 5 minutes, then just stops.
Nothing brings back the wifi except for turning on/off airplane mode
(ie: trying to fetch email, facebook, safari, etc all fail...
waiting and trying repeatedly doesn't work).

However, I've noticed the following:
sometimes my wifi works for days...
I suspected that it is related to some program that I ran that left some cruft in memory, but even reboots of my touch dont remove the problem.

I'll follow the recipe below regardless to see if it fixes the issue.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried everything on the list but it hasn't solved the problem.
The really odd thing is that only the iPod Touchs 4G are affected. All our other devices connected to the router work great, including our two other iPod Touchs 3G. We even had a guest from abroad who connected his iPod Touch 3G to our WiFi network all afternoon on Sunday and he didn't have any trouble either.

Found out a little bit more...
powercycle of router fixes the wifi connection not working,
but the problem comes back (~30-60min this time).

However, turning on/off airplane mode also fixes the connection,
but the problem comes back.

NEW DATA: I also lose bluetooth headset service connection I had going too.
This seems to happen EVERY TIME I LOSE WIFI.

In this particular example, My iPod Touch 2G was hooked up via USB, was charging, and did not go to sleep (blank screen).

I agree that it is most likely the iPod touch. My 32GB, 4th generation touch does the same thing, and will sometimes pick up the signal on its own.

It is NOT the router. I have running the following devices with no hiccups running off of this router at various times (not all at once):
-Macbook Pros
-iPod touch 2nd gen 32GB
-iPhone 4
-iPad Wifi X 2
-myTouch 4G (android)
-HTC G2 (android)
-and numerous others.

None have this problem. The ipod will still do even a few feet away from the router.

All of those devices use different WiFi protocols unless your touch and iPads all use iOS 4.2.1. Interactions with router firmware are not all created equal either. My normal advice is to run the latest firmware in the router and on the touch/iPad/iPhone is to reset the network settings.

If you have reset network settings, updated your router firmware, and rebooted your router and still have problems - time to visit the Apple Genius as you might have a hardware problem. If you still under warranty, by all means get it fixed or replaced.

If you set up your router to do only 802.11b/g or just 802.11g, then the only downside will be that no device capable of 802.11n will connect at the higher data rate, it will simply drop back to 802.11g. You may have to establish new connections for any devices connected to your router when you make the change, but this is no different from resetting the router for any other reason.

Remember, this is a suggestion as a diagnostic test to see if backing off 802.11n makes any change in the observed connection dropping of 4G iPod Touch units.

You have nothing to lose and you can always reconfigure your router back to 802.11b/g/n
