Unable to access DVD/CD Drive

I am unable to access my DVD/CD drive on a MacBook Pro running on 10.6. The drive will not accept a disk. When I clicked on DVD Player, it states there is an Initialization Error and a valid DVD drive could not be found. When I check in Systems Profiler under Disc Burning, it states that No disc burning drive was found. It's acting like the drive doesn't exist yet I burned a number of CDs about 2 weeks ago and it worked just fine. I have not upgraded any software in the intervening time. Any ideas of suggestions?
