I signed up for the app store when my browser was in Spanish. I downloaded Skype for IPOD, no problems, now I want to download stuff in English, so I used the CHANGE COUNTRY setting, then I get a message that my account is only for use in SPAIN. What is that about? To set up the account was nearly 2 euros, no probs, but do I need to pay the same for say, French and Dutch? Am I missing something here?

Well yes you can change the language easily but the deal with downloads and purchase ONLY from the country you registered in is a bummer. Does that mean if you have also registered via your IPOD with apps in France then go to the US you have to create a new account and give your credit card again? It is all new to me; just think I am missing something here. Or does Apple think that everyone speaks English and downloads or buys from the US. Does all this make sense?
You can only buy from the itunes store of the country of your residence ( as verified by the billing address of your cc) and you can only buy while physically in that country.
Thanks for all your help. OK That seems clear. I can understand that each country store needs their cut. What about using ipod touch and creating an account then moving around countries? As the account created is the same no? Apple store via ITUNES or APPS via IPOD touch? Plug in your IPOD to PC, UPLOAD / DOWNLOAD? My reason for asking as my son has a new ipod touch for Christmas 4G and he would like to download the free stuff but apparently you still need to give your credit card details. For a 12 year old? And FREE Apps? What is that about? I am 66 and trying to get my head around it. How secure is giving your CC details to a 12 yr old on an IPOD?
If you buy an itunes gift card you can redeem it from the itunes page while setting up your account it will then not ask you for credit card details it only asks you for credit card info if you try to set up and account without using a voucher/gift card. I suggest you buy the lowest denomination card possible and open and account that way.
Oh for the country thing yes it's a pain but not really apple's fault this is the fault of the copyright industry which have split the world into incredibly small segments and refuse to realise that we no longer stay in the one place and that the internet is global not regional.
So if I buy a credit from my spanish store on Itunes, can my son set up an account in France on his Ipod using that credit or do we have the same copyright problem?
Well, I went to the apple store to purchase a gif apps credit. It asks who is it for and does not accept the FRENCH address (post code not accepted - wrong country). So it seems you can not buy a gift certificate from one country and give to another. How sad is that? I honestly can not believe it is so hard to spend a few bucks. I thought Interflora was hard, this is a nightmare. You can be anywhere in the world, log on to any country and buy software or FREE stuff in your own language. I am lost for words.

That is correct. Gifts and prepaid cards are valid only in the country of sale. You may, however, be able to purchase prepaid iTunes cards using the French Apple Store and have them shipped to your son or other recipients in that country. See:
