How do i make a "fill in the blank" line????

I am making a questionnaire and need to have lines/spaces that can be filled in.

When i use the underscore it does not work bc it moves the lines and words. I need something that when i send the document to a client they can fill it out and e-mail it back to me with out messing up the entire format of the document.

how do i do this? please help!

thank you!

(and Chapter 13 in the User Guide did not help me)

The 'trick' described by Jerry works fine when the original author is the one filling in the blanks, as that person is aware how the space and underline was created.

A person other than the author might not realize the underline represented a strict limit to the length of the entry. Even a single extra character could wreak havoc on your careful formatting.

Still, better than the technique you've been using.

I assume that you are going to send the document after exporting as a Word file for compatibility.

The way to have the sentence not get longer as a blank is filled is to use Tabs. Three Tabs will allow you to have a space, an underline and another space before your next character in the line. You then select the second tab and format with underline, then adjust the stops to arrange the size of the spaces and the length of the underline. All of this works the same in Word and Numbers and is such a common trick that you wouldn't expect it to be in the User Guide.
