AirPlay audio sync issue

I'm using AirPlay to stream audio over WiFi from iTunes 10.1 to both an Airport Express and a 2nd gen Apple TV. My network setup has a DSL modem connected to an older (Buffalo) WiFi base station, with the Airport Express connected as a WDS remote. Both the MacBook serving audio via iTunes and the Apple TV get their wireless connection via the Airport Express, which is about 35 feet away. Signal strength as seen on the Macbook is good (5 bars).

If I play audio simultaneously through the speakers connected to the Airport Express and the computer speakers, there is good synchronization. However, the audio played through the AppleTV is delayed by several (10s of?) milliseconds, which means that playing through AppleTV and computer in the same room results in a significant echo effect. The same is heard when playing through the AppleTV and Airport Express at the same time.

Has anyone else had this problem playing from iTunes through the AppleTV? Any suggestions as to how to solve this, or will it require another software update? My understanding was that AirPlay was meant to synchronize audio played through multiple speakers - this is not the case with my setup. Music played in two rooms is difficult to listen to when between the two sets of speakers.

This may have already been covered so if so please forgive the repeat. I have an Apple TV (Gen 1) playing through a Samsung Plasma screen which was playing the music with a noticable delay compared to my Mac and to a Bowers & Wilkins, Zeppelin Air speaker.

The Mac and the Zepplin where in sync but the Samsung was out. I experimented with the dalay setting per one of the previous posts but the thing that made the most noticable difference was setting the Samsung's sound to "Standard" rather than Music, Movie, Clear Voice and all the other "processed" setting they typically offer. This can be done in the screens Menu settings.

Hope that helps.

Thank you so much, I did't believe it could be the TV in my situation - because I don't play sound through the TV, but a Denon AVR-3311 - but all I did was turn off the TV and after the amp did some cycling the sound came back IN SYNC. Again, thank you so much.

I have a similar setup--Denon AVR-891. Turning off the TV made the AirPlay go back in sync, woohoo!

Since we typically control music playback with iOS devices (Remote.app is amazing), the TV being off isn't the end of the world.

Thanks all!

I have a apple TV 2ª Gen link by HDMI direct to my LG TV and a PC. Unfortunally, there is not a sound delay option in my the TV set UP. I also tried to set the tv sound to standart rather than "Movie" or "sports" as did the other commenter, but it did not work. Anyone has another idea? There is no use in multiple speakers if they are delayed to each one. Air play multiple speakers need a manual sound delay control urgent. Any help will be welcomed.

I've got the same issue. I'm completely updated on all ends, both the Apple TV, and all software updates for the iMac are good.

When playing to an Airport Express, the iMac & express are perfectly in sync..

When playing to Apple TV 2, audio is not in sync.

I also, do not have the ability to connect with optical, only HDMI.

Hey guys I have a similar problem.

Conditions:

1) Aiport express connected to logitech speakers (works fine)

2) sony home theatre connected directed to mac via a stereo mini plug (where you put headphones)

So my problem is when I play the music through itunes on my computer the speakers that is connected to the airport express is delayed. Is there a way for both to play at the same time and volume because I have tried tweaking with the individual volumes to see if it will work but nope. The best I could do was let the logitech play louder than the sony speakers since it is delayed. If any of you guys have any idea on what to do let me know I have a party in 5 days. Thanks in advance!

Are you sure the sound via the Airport Express is delayed and it's not the other way around?

If you read all the previous entries you'll realise the culprit is either an AppleTV, an AV Receiver or a new TV. This is because all of these process 5.1 (or more) sound channels and Video which requires buffering and processing to keep everything in sync - which takes time.

It is impossible to create a proper 5.1 AV signal without inducing a delay between source to output.

Airplay, Airport Express, and simple Logitech speakers do not require any processing.

As you do not mention an AppleTV, or that your TV is turned On at the time you are suffering this problem, I can only assume it's your Sony AV amp that is causing the problem. You need to check the manual to see if there is an option to turn all Delays off, like a direct Music mode.

From what I've seen on AV forums, there are some older/cheaper AV amps (and TVs) that do not have such set-up and simply delay the audio output regardless of whether signal processing is needed or not. Others, as mentioned here, are smart enough to know when you turn the TV Off, there is no longer a requirement to sync the sound to the video, so buffering and processing is not needed and revert to music mode.

To tell you the truth I have no idea. I have tried everything I can think of and still nothing. At a low volume you don't hear the delay but as the volume increases that is when it's at its worst. I looked in the manual but the only thing about delay is for picture to audio delay for DVD's so I have no idea how to turn the **** delay off lol. I tried calling SOny but you already know how that discussion was.

Yes, which is why some (like myself) reported that turning the TV off resolved the issue because the AV amp was smart enough to realise there was no longer a need to do all the lip synching processing that goes on with 5.1 AV. Others have indicated they have been able to manually turn it off either at the TV, or some 'standard' or 'music' setting in their amp.

You appear to be in the unfortunate situation where you don't even have manual control :-(

I just mention this because some think it is an Airplay problem, or something that Apple should fix, when the simple facts are that Airplay is not intended to be a 5.1 sound system, it simply sends a digital signal. What you do with that signal depends on how much you spend on AV equipment, and clearly 5.1 AV has delay built into it.

The solution to this problem should ALWAYS lay with the AV equipment, unfortunately some equipment does not allow you the necessary control.

I have been using an Apple TV 2 and an Airport Express as music streaming devices for some time now.

Both were perfectly synced all the time until I installed one of the latest Apple TV updates (must have been some time in summer).

Since then it's been impossible to get the music synced.

I guess we'll have to wait for another update to fix this :-/
