Effects won't render

I just got a new camera for Christmas, so I switched my sequence settings in FCP to h.264 as to match my media files. It worked great so I don't have to render all the clips I use from my camcorder (camera records in 264).
I am puzzled, however, to find that when I apply any effects to the clip the render line above the timeline turns red where the clip is applied, but it never turns grey after rendering. It always remains red no matter what I do to render. And, the effects do not show in the canvas when the time line plays, it is as if there were never applied. When I export the clip as a QT the effects are there in the right place as I laid them out. I must have some setting not right. The obvious problem is I cannot see the effects in real time play back on the canvas to make sure I have them laid out correctly. Can anyone help?
