Kernel Panic on MacBook Pro, brand new.

HI!

I have done a lot of research on the kernel panic. It happens on Safari, and I have done all I think I can do based on what I have read on these forums. (PRAM, reinstall OS, repair permissions, ditch safari prefs, etc)

Another odd thing is that it only happens when my 24 inch cinema display is plugged in.

Here is the part that seems to be the most important.

This is the part that is consistent in every crash...

---------
Is there a way to replace this?
com.apple.driver.AppleIntelHDGraphics(6.2.4)

--- I HAVE replaced the OS and it happened again.

Safari issue? Plug in issue? Flash issue? Like I said, it's only when I am browsing, and it happens .

Could it be a RAM or hardware issue? Something with the display?

Anyone?

THANKS!!!

I have the exact same problem. New full-loaded 17" MBP, fully updated OSX, and Safari causes a kernel panic about once PER DAY! It's driving me crazy. I've reinstalled Safari, zapped PRAM, updated flash, all to no avail. Here's the kernel panic log:

I doubt that's true. I mean... they would not design it this way if you were not meant to just plug it in any old way any old time. There would also be a warning on it and all if that was the case. I can see how life might be prolonged if you did it that way, but this issue is not caused by this. I did the EXACT same thing with my last MBP with the same monitor and NEVER had the issue. It's something in these new MBP's.

Boston Law,

This has been happening to me ever since I got this new i7, but like once every few days.

In all my research yesterday, I found that this is REALLY a common issue. I will have no idea if my changes yesterday worked for another couple weeks since it was not an every day occurrence.

Here are the 2 things that give me hope until something is changed..

1) A lot of research does point towards some interaction with Flash with Safari and the video card. SO There is a 10.2 beta flash which is supposed to be better. I found that and installed it.

2) I put in gfxCardStatus 2.0 (google it) ... If you look at your report (as in mine) there is something in Safari as well as the Intel HD card. So, this hard wires it to the Intel card OR the NVIDIA card.

People with this exact report have reported success with both these changes, so I just did both.

When you are no plugged into a monitor, you can switch the gfx thingie to Intel card to save power if on battery.

If these do not do it, I do not know what will... as people with our situation have reported NO change with RAM swamps and even log board changes.

Another commonality may be the loading of info from a Time Capsule or other Mac when you got the MBP. I did this of course, and I had lots of other bugs, most of which I was able to fix it the reinstall of various extensions. But I do not know if this is related to that. If you look at the report, the above changes are the most related to the report we are getting.

I think it is something Apple needs to change in the OS as the melt downs always occur within Safari,

Personally, it always freezes before I get to see what is on that page it freezes on... but based on the report, it must be some sort of flash video or something it does not like. Or perhaps there is something going on where the Mac wants to change video cards, and it does and just crashes.

From my research, one of these are the most plausible response.

And to RetiredEngineer.... I did not mean to be crass at all.. apologies. I appreciate your help. Just that this issue is not related to plugging it in, as I never had that issue with my last MBP (which was the generation before this)

Thanks!

UPDATE 2:

Called Apple and got a higher up in tech support.

They said THIS IS NOT a hardware issue, and they are working on it as a top priority in the MBP team.

Also, the tech had me make sure Safari was in 64 bit, which it was NOT. I had it in 32 from my past system. He said that MIGHT help, BUT not that it would.

He said that a FIX will happen pretty soon.

That's all she wrote.... so do not take your Macs in, and ignore all the other fixes as I tried them all and they ALL don't work...even the Flash 10.2 upgrade.

He DID admit that it was an issue between flash, safari and the newer MBP's.

I have never had a Mac tech at apple actually admit to a real issue before, so I imagine it's pretty significant.

I have a similar crash report on my mbp. It's 3 months old and had 2 kernel panics so far. Both times I was using Itunes when it crashed.

Add myself to the list of people affected by kernel panics seemingly caused by graphics issues. Its good to see that Apple might be releasing some form of a fix soon so I will keep an eye on this thread for sure, or be pleasantly surprised when system update asks me to update my OS.

Here's a thread I started, but was directed to this section of the forums for better assistance:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2698819&tstart=0

I have all my kernel panics saved, but the common thread is there are always references to graphics in the panic reports.

I've experienced the same issue since August of 2010 with a June MacBookPro 17-inch and this is the first thread where I see that there might just be some action FINALLY coming from Apple. I've sent every single crash report I've had regarding this issue to Apple since I started receiving this crash. Hopefully something will become of it since I can't imagine how Apple can continue to ignore it since it's only going to get worse as more new machines are confronted with this issue.

Adding my voice to the chorus. Got new 17" MBP in October. Was having kernel panics almost daily; now they seem to have cut back to weekly, but this week it was 2X. Like everyone else, I'm pretty sure it always happens in Safari. Had just decided to check the forums to see if panics this frequent are "normal." Unfortunately, it appears they are. Hoping for a fix soon.

Kernel Panic on MacBook Pro, brand new.
