Is it possible to put call on hold and listen to a voicemail?

I had a situation where I was on a phone call and needed to give the person a reference number that was in my voicemail. I put the call on hold, assuming I could pop over to voicemail and listen to a message while the call was still connected, and ended up just staring at the phone for a few seconds and going "wait a minute, I don't see a way." Is this not possible? I have the 3G iPhone with latest OS. Thanks!

You should be able to put the call on hold, then place a separate call to your own phone number. That will get you into your voice mail.

Although, if you merge the calls together, the iPhone seems to lose its ability to send DTMF tones to voice mail. In other words, voice mail does not recognize your key presses after you merge the calls. Either don't merge the calls, or wait until the message is playing.
