Sony DSC-TX5 Videos with High Speed (Chipmunk) Sound

I just imported some videos shot using Sony DSC-TX5 (1280x720 "Fine" MP4). All imported files have their audio sped up, and consequently everything sounds like a chipmunk. Unfortunately, I deleted the movies within camera before checking the imported files in iMovie. But, new movies shot and played within the camera all seems to have intact audio when played within the camera.
I've also imported HD videos shot using Sony a55 and its audio remain intact.
Is there a fix for this?

Check that you don't have an Audio Effect checked for Pitch Up (4 separate options are available). Click on the little gear icon (cogwheel) on the clips and select Clip Adjustments. What appears alongside the Audio Effect item in the window that opens? If it shows "None" then the audio should be normal. To look at the effects, click on the bar and you will see 20 effects (including None) which you can test by clicking on them in turn.

Of course, this may not be the answer to your issue, but worth a try!

If you shot a new clip using the same settings (1280x720 "Fine" MP4) and re-import it into iMovie, is the audio ok?

I'm afraid this isn't the problem. These newly imported clips are virtually untouched. Nonetheless, as you suggested, I checked the Audio settings on these clips and found that no effect has been applied.

Looking at the waveforms under each clip, I see that the waveforms are just about 50% shorter than each clip… suggesting that the audio somehow has been compressed to 50% of the clip's duration.

I had exactly this problem, importing the video both from within camera, and taking the sd card out and putting it in a reader. I quit Imovie, reopened it. Then I reimported the video. SAME PROBLEM - no change. Then I restarted the computer, opened Imovie, reimported the video - now for the fourth time. AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE!! The audio was perfect.
So what caused this in the first place, and what happened in the reboot that fixed it? Beats me. One moral of the story is no matter how good Mac OS gets, rebooting the computer is always a good thing to try. Another moral of course is, don't delete any files until you know your imports are good and you have them backed up.
