how to change default name of screen shot

The screen shot program that comes with every Mac is very useful. In Leopard and before, each new screen shot was named Picture 1, picture 2, etc.

In Snow Leopard, the name is now "Screen shot 2011-01-05 at 10.52.42 AM.png"

Does anyone see how dumb this is? I regularly take 4 or 5 screen shots of CAD dwgs, spreadsheets, pics, to send off by email to my colleagues.

The long name wraps around on my desktop and is unreadable. I can't tell one from the other.

Do any of the programmers out there know how to go inside the system and shorten the name?

That would be a great help.

I was able to make this edit since day one when Snow Leopard first came out and reverted back to the more simplified " pic ." So consider field tested with no issues to report.

side note: Under Finder>View> show view options if you set "grid spacing" to it's maximum, you get to see longer file name before it "wraps."

Read Leroy's linked hint and all the comments, especially the one which allows you to select a different location for the screenshots. I just send mine to a Desktop folder named ScrShts, keep it in list view, and sorted by Date Modified. That allows me to see the entire name and also keep the Desktop uncluttered.
