itunes cannot find airport express that is connected to a wireless repeater

I have an airport express that connects to my wireless network. I just installed a repeater to boost the signal. The router and repeater are FritzBox. When the airport express is connected to the router, itunes can find it. When it is connected to the repeater, itunes cannot find it. I assume itunes is trying to communicate through the router and that is why it does not "see" the airport express. Any ideas?

A small correction: Itunes always recognizes the airport express, irrespective of whether it is registered with the router or the repeater, but it fails to connect with the airport express when it is registered with the repeater. It tries for a few minutes and then gives up. There is no error message.
