Remote app not finding apple tv

For the first few weeks everything worked fine. The last couple days I would connect to the same wifi network and start the remote app and it couldn't find the apple tv at all. If I restarted the iPhone it sometime would find it after I rebooted. Anyone else have any problems like this?

Not sure if it's related to yours, but my story goes something like ...

Apple has released a recent update to the Remote app, I had v1.3.3 before, and recently it jumped to v2.1.
Remote v2.1 has a whole new set of requirements that could mean your iPod Touch / iPhone can no longer control the AppleTV.
I had to go back to v1.3.3 of the Remote app (I have a comprehensive backup strategy) to get everything to work again.

Details:
original Apple TV (came with firmware v1.0, upgraded to v3.0.2.
iPod Touch (1st gen) used to control it, with v3.x firmware
Mac Pro, 10.5.x with iTunes 8 (does everything I need it to).

It looks like the new Remote app requires something called "Home Sharing", requiring your AppleID and password. Why ? I don't know, must be for some sort of mobile web control or to access the home music collection from anywhere in the world. Whatever, don't need it or want it, but your AppleTV may not work with the (current) Remote app without it.
Of course, it requires a current version of iTunes.
What I really don't understand is why iTunes v8 lets me download a Remote app, and install it onto my iPod Touch, that immediately stops working unless I upgrade to iTunes v10. Muppets.

If it sounds familiar, you may need to recover the old version of Remote and re-install it on your iPod Touch / iPhone.
Get into your home directory, into Music, into iTunes, into Mobile Applications. In there should be all the versions of Remote you ever downloaded. v1.3.3 for me was about 1.6MB, v1.0 was there at 1.1MB, v2.1 was there at 22MB.
Duplicated them all to the Desktop.
Into iTunes, turned off sync of the Remote application, confirmed to remove it and synced. Deleted the v2.1 Remote app from iTunes.
Double-clicked the v1.3.3 Remote in the Finder. It installs it in iTunes.
In iTunes, set to sync the Remote app again, and synced. Usable remote app now back on iPod Touch / iPhone.
Re-added the AppleTV library (go to AppleTV and Add Remote).
Keep a backup of the correct Remote app for you.

I backup the home directories every night so I just used a backup snapshot from a month ago to see what I had installed then - when it was working.

I've got both ATV1 and ATV2. Everything works fine with ATV1 but Remote App recognizes but cannot/will not connect to ATV2 (it has a separate name). Both on same wireless network. Each has a different IP address? Why will Remote App recognize and connect to ATV1 and recogngize ATV2 but not connect to it (ATV2)?

Check to make sure homeshairing on your Atv is on. That may interfere at times or possibly be the cause of a glitch. Also restarting the ipod was a good idea. Sometimes it's not that the ipod can't find the Atv, just that it hasn't found it yet. Restarting it means the Ipod will search the connected network, a process similar to when an itouch uses the airplay function.

Sometimes turning of the Internet connection under "Settings-wifi-on/off" will work, but it's not 100% reliable. The Remote app comes out with updates just like every other app on the market. I'm sure with time this reliability issue will be patched up.

I had similar problems. In my case, the Remote app on my iPhone and iPad would work sometimes, and then not others. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason. And sometimes my Apple TV 2 could see my iTunes library, and then it would disappear. I noticed that rebooting my router, a BEC DSL modem/router provided by my phone company, would fix it, and then it would break again. I had a helpful Apple tech support call, and the engineer had me ping my ATV 2, iPhone, and iPod from my (Windows) PC, and sometimes that would work, sometimes not. So I contacted my phone company's tech support, and that engineer explained that the BEC modem/router wasn't "completely reliable" for intranet wifi communication between local devices. The engineer recommended that I use my own wifi router and set the BEC modem/router up as just a modem ("Pure Bridge"). I did that, and the problem has been completely solved. No more connectivity problems! Basically, my DSL modem/router always allowed internet access to wifi connected devices, but would sometimes mysteriously fail to allow intranet communications between my local devices.

You don't need any backups, what's in the Music/iTunes/Mobile Applications/ directory ?

Just upgraded to ios9 and now the Remote app won't work after working perfectly for months during which I updated the app regularly. Reinstalled the app, still no go. Remote app says turn on Home Sharing on Apple TV (which is already turned on), and Apple TV says turn on Home Sharing on Remote (which is already turned on). I just deleted Remote and am back to using the Apple TV Remote. Anyone have ideas? Apple TV A1469, ios 9.0 on iPhone 6.
