appleworks file won't print in Snow Leopard

I recently migrated apps and files from an older iMac to an iMac5,1 (late-2006 model). I use the same HP photosmart 7960 printer. When I send a file to print, one I have printed before with the old iMac, it won't print. I went onto HP's site to download a driver but during installation it says the setup assistant quit unexpectedly. I am trying to print files from Apple Works 6. I can print from Text Edit and from Mail,

Can you help? Thanks.

The documents that migrated from my old iMac are all AppleWorks 6. I upgraded to AppleWorks 6.2.9 on the newer computer and it is the older AW6 word processing files I can’t print out.

I can print out a new word processing file I create in AW 6.2.9. (with Snow Leopard). But when I try to print one of my old AW 6 files, the printer spits out a single blank sheet of paper. Same thing with older RTF files. I have a lot of these older AW6 files (I am a volunteer literacy tutor). They are lessons that I want to use again.

Migration Assistant moved many of the files from my AW folder in my old iMac (pre-Intel) to the Document folder but I can’t print them out either.

I don’t have Rosetta and I confess, I don’t know what it is. Is it supposed to come with OS X?
Thank you for your help.

Or you could open the old document in 6.2.9 and Save-As a new document.

Are you opening the documents from within AW 6.2.9, or are you double-clicking them? If the latter, could an older version of AppleWorks be opening it? Try Get Info on one of the old documents, and be sure the Open-With is set to AppleWorks 6.app. If not, change it and click Change All.

From AppleWorks 6.2.9, I would expect any necessary conversion to be done automatically. If you can open it, it should then be as good as a new document.

I can't tell what version is opening the AW docs. The 'get info' option doesn't appear under the apple sign in the upper left corner for any AW docs, migrated docs or ones I have created after updating to AW6.2.9.
Old AW docs that I "save as" and new docs that I cut/paste old content into don't print and don't show a preview PDF. However, an AW doc created today, with a test sentence previewed and printed. In preview, under Tools, it says the content creator was AppleWorks 6.
But anything with old AW content does neither; so even though I can open the files, "save as" and/or cut-paste, they don't appear to be converting automatically.
Pardon this dumb question, but is it possible the installation of the AW 6.2.9 upgrade isn't complete and that I need to uninstall and reinstall the upgrade?

Thanks for your help.

It's more likely something like the new computer having a different version of the font you were using. Try highlighting all the text and selecting the font again and see if that makes a difference. Also, if there are images, a corrupt image can also cause a file not to print.

I've had to do this many times over the past four or five years as Apple updates the included versions of the basic fonts, like Palatino, for example.

Glaucous-

From the finder, you first select the AW document. The Get Info option is under the File menu. Alternately, you can Control-Click (or Right Click) on the document and choose the Get Info option.

If you double-click the document to open it, you can tell what version of AppleWorks opened it by selecting "About AppleWorks" under the AppleWorks menu at the top.

Fred, I'm sorry, I mistyped about where I look for "get info" on a selected document. I do look under the File menu. It is grayed out as is "About Appleworks" and right clicking/ctrl click doesn't work.

For instance: I select (in Finder) an AW doc created in 2009. Right click doesn't work. File menu, About Appleworks grayed out. I double click to open it. Right clicking brings up usual editing menu. File menu visible but no "get info," About Appleworks says it's version AW 6.2.9. This doc doesn't preview and doesn't print. Then I change font and type size and save. This time it previews (content creator AppleWorks 6, creation date Jan. 10, 2011. AND it prints. I close it and select it again. Right click doesn't work, File menu and About Appleworks still grayed out and the "last opened" says 12/7/09.

I select another doc, done last year (pre AW 6.2.9) Right clicking doesn't work. File and About Appleworks grayed out. I open the doc. It fails to preview or print. I select all and change fonts. Save. Select Print and then Preview. This time it doesn't preview and doesn't print; I do "Save As" with same negative result.

I select another doc ("reading practice" 3/13/06). File menu grayed out, About Appleworks grayed out, right click doesn't respond. I double-click to open it: File menu now visible, right-click brings up editing tools, About Appleworks says AW 6.2.9. I make no changes but this doc previews (content creator AW6, creation date 1/10/11) AND it prints. I close and go back to Finder, select the same doc: Appleworks, File menu grayed out, no right-click response. But "last opened" shows "Today."

I can't suss out the logic in all this.

Thanks for your help.

Glaucous-

You're right. It defies logic. I'm thinking something else besides AppleWorks may have a problem.

Things I'd try include using Disk Utility to Repair Disk Permissions and Verify Disk. You might also reset the PRAM by restarting while holding down Option Command+PR until you hear at least two startup Bongs.

There may not be good reason to do these things, except it is relatively easy and shouldn't hurt anything!

I have also been experimenting with fonts as you suggest. I selected the font again but it made no difference. Then I changed the font from Ariel (nearly all my lessons are in that font) to Courier and it proofed and printed.
I did this to another Ariel doc, changed it to helvetica neue and it previewed and printed. Then I created a new doc, pasted in Ariel text. It wouldn't proof and printed a blank sheet except for the top line (which was in a larger size Ariel). This happens on other files when the top line is at the top margin. Usually I leave the top few lines blank but on this one, there was text on it. I then changed all the text to Palatino and it previewed and printed just fine.
It may not be relevant, but when I tried to update the driver for my HP photosmart 7900, on the install I got the Console and the message: HP setup assistant quit unexpectedly. I will try the measures Fred recommends. I thank both of you for your help.

glaucous, are you certain you are in Finder when you do this?

If you are in Finder, the Application menu (first to the right of the Apple menu) should be "Finder", and its first item should be "About Finder," not "About AppleWorks."

The only time you will see "About AppleWorks" in the Application menu is when you are 'in' AppleWorks.

It will be greyed when you have a dialogue box (for example, the Open dialogue, or the Save dialogue) open. Under this condition Hide AppleWorks and Hide Others will be the only active items in the Application menu. All items in the File menu will be greyed, as will be all items in Edit and Window menus. Help will show AppleWorks Help as an active item. And, as you note, right-clicking the file name or icon will have no effect (other than selecting the file), and double-clicking the file will open it (in the Open dialogue).

Barry

Per your suggestion, I ran Verify Disk and it stopped and said the Disk needed to be repaired.

If I understand correctly how to proceed, I will insert the Mac OS X install disk then restart while holding down the "C" key, then after the computer has restarted, open the applications folder, select Disk Utility and have it repair the disk that I was running Verify Disk on in the first place.

I hope this will repair the disk and somehow straighten out the other problems. Thank you again for the help.

Glaucous-

When you startup from the install disk, I don't think you can access the Applications Folder. The Disk Utility option is in one of the menus at the top of the screen, as best I can recall. Once selected, it works the same as the one in the Applications Folder.

Did your computer come with a hardware test disk? It might be the same as the install disk but starting up with a different key combination. If so, give that a try as well.
