Q: appleworks file won't print in Snow Leopard

I recently migrated apps and files from an older iMac to an iMac5,1 (late-2006 model). I use the same HP photosmart 7960 printer. When I send a file to print, one I have printed before with the old iMac, it won't print. I went onto HP's site to download a driver but during installation it says the setup assistant quit unexpectedly. I am trying to print files from Apple Works 6. I can print from Text Edit and from Mail,

Can you help? Thanks.

    Glaucous-

When you startup from the install disk, I don't think you can access the Applications Folder. The Disk Utility option is in one of the menus at the top of the screen, as best I can recall. Once selected, it works the same as the one in the Applications Folder.

Did your computer come with a hardware test disk? It might be the same as the install disk but starting up with a different key combination. If so, give that a try as well.

Yes, you start as though you're going to install OS X, by choosing a language, and then the next screen (where the main window onscreen shows the OS X installer) has a menubar at the top where you can choose Disk Utility. The main menu heading reads something like Utilities or Tools (I think the former).

Sorry for the delay. I ran the disk repair from the Snow Leopard disk and repaired disk permissions. The printing problems worsened. I tried uninstalling then reinstalling the HP disk and there was no printing at all. I finally found and downloaded Apple's HP print drivers 2.5.2 dmg. Now I'm essentially back to where I started: It will not print anything in an Ariel typeface but it will print if I change the typeface to, say, Helvetica or Palentino. Nor does it display the print panel that allows me to print multiple copies at once. Believe it or not, the prospect of changing typefaces in hundreds of lessons no longer seems so onerous!
BTW, when I select these files in Finder the Get Info shows that they are AppleWorks 6 (no version is specified) w/.cwk extensions. They open in AW6.2.9.
Thank you both for your help.

Never use the disk to install print drivers--those are almost always way too old. Go to HP's site and download the latest drivers.

It's about time for you to get iWork or Microsoft Office. AppleWorks is no longer a supported product, so every time you upgrade to a newer OS, there is less of a chance of it being able to work.

    You are funny.
Read my signature to understand why some of us continue to use AppleWorks.

I know I am late to the party, but I found the easiest solution to this problem is unfortunately an extra step. To print the file with the desired fonts, Select Preview in the print dialogue box. This will open your AW6 file in the Preview application, and you will then be able to print it normally from there. Why this works is beyond me.

Whelp . . . just got my new iMac i5 21.5" last week and low and behold SOME Appleworks files will not print.  In particular - envelopes in database.  Other database documents are fine.  I tried over and over and it DID print my logo once.  My printer is a HP 2300.  My hunch is supplied driver with the new 10.6.7 computer.  Has anybody resolved this issue?

If you used the Migration Assistant to move from the older iMac to the newer one, it will have moved your account with the preferences in your home library. AppleWorks doesn't handle this well. You need to delete the AppleWorks preferences & then use Disk Utility to repair permissions.

    Peggy,

I dumped the preferences, ran Disk Utility and restarted the computer and repaired permissions.  Just won't print any envelope database file.  Weird.  Everything works like it will print.  Just nothing appears on the envelope.

Whatever it is, I will put my money on a easy solution - sooner or later . . .

I think the "easy" solution is to save your labels DB as ASCII text. This creates a tab-delimited file but you need to add the .txt extension, AppleWorks won't do it for you. Then import the .txt file into Address Book & print the labels.

    Peggy,

We're talking envelopes - database envelopes.  I haven't even tried to see if labels print.  I REALLY need my envelopes to print.  They print fine on the old iMac g5 running 10.4.11.

Address Book can print to envelopes, too.

My address names aren't in Address Book.  Something isn't right.  Can't tell if it's the computer, printer, software, drivers - who knows.  Everybody blames everybody else.  One database form printed fine until the 6th layout.  Never printing problem on the old G5.  EVERY other problem the iMac g5 had - I had!
