How can I use my iPad as a modem to connect to the internet

Hi John and welcome to the Apple Discussions.

That is certainly the first time that question has been asked 🙂

First, does your laptop see the iPad as part of a wireless network? If so, have you tried to access the iPad from the laptop, and what has been tthe result?

You would need, at the least, to connect to your 3G ISP with the iPad, and then log into the iPad from the laptop. No one has discussed doing that on here that I can remember, so this will take some experimentation.

I have iOS 4.2.1, 4.1 was never released in the US, and following the path Settings > Network does not give access to anything like Internet Tethering. The two options you can get to are: VPN and WiFi, neither of which permit tethering as an option.

Granted I don't read Afrikaans, but enough German to follow most of it.

It might be that your Service Provider in South Africa does not support a Tethered device on its network.

So contact VodaCom or MTN or whoever is your provider and ask them if you can tether your device.

It may be an option that your provider could "unlock" for you

A couple of months ago we still had to pay to unlock the option to tether an iPhone to a Laptop.
