My best suggestion for persons having difficulty with the update to 10.6.6 is to run the Mac OS X v10.6.6 Update Combo located here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1349.
The combo updater replaces all files updated since 10.6.0 with brand new "fresh" copies. I used the combo updater and have not experienced any issues. My computer feels as if it has had a tune up and runs smoother than before the update.
Here is how I performed the update:
1.a Download the Combo updater for 10.6.6
1. Check the Hard Drive for errors and repaired permissions using Disk Utility.
2. Boot into Safe Mode Hold shift key at the chime when restarting to let OS X run its maintenance routines.
3. Run the Onyx Maintenance routines Always restart twice after using OnyX. If you have a failed 10.6.6 instal (i.e. OS running slowly) read this CAUTION: Do not use Onyx or any other third party utility UNLESS you are sure it is compatible with 10.6.6! Skip running a third party maintenance utility if you are running 10.6.6.
4. Reboot if you ran Onyx (or other maintenance utility) see caution above.
5. Now run the 10.6.6 combo installer and restart.
The first restart after the update may be slow since OS X has to rebuild the caches. I always log in to my user account just to be sure everything is okay and then reboot once more just to be sure the caches and other files rebuilt after the first reboot are working.
Using the combo updater should work since all the updated files since 10.6.0 are replaced with new copies.
TRY THE COMBO UPDATER BEFORE YOU RE-INITALIZE the hard drive. When Mac OS X shows symptoms of slowing down, unlike Windows, it does not require the re-installation of the OS on a freshly erased hard drive to bring the OS up to its usual speediness. Usually all thats required is a simple reboot, (sometimes booting into Safe Mode is required if a simple reboot fails to correct the issue) or in this case installing the Combo Updater.
I hope this helps.
