How do I upgrade my system?

I have an OS X 10.5.8. I purchased the Ilife 11 because my system told me to upgrade. Now that I have purchased it, I am being told by my computer that it's not compatible, and I need version 10.6.3 or later. I can't imagine I have to buy a whole new computer, so how do I upgrade my system to the 10.6.3 or later so that I can use the program that I bought?

http://store.apple.com/us/product/MACOS_XSNGL it only costs 29 dollars to upgrade 10.5 to 10.6

But you do need to have:
Mac computer with an Intel processor
1GB of memory
5GB of available disk space
DVD drive for installation

Apple Menu, about this mac
the window that pops up will include how much ram you have, as well as processor type.

Curious how your system told you to upgrade? If you want to upgrade, you will need to purchase Snow Leopard, which is 10.6 - the DVD is available widely for $29. After installation, you can update to the current version via Software Update. And, after that, you can install the iLife 11.

thanks a lot. When I would log on to Iphoto it sent up a message that the new i life 11 version is available and click the link to upgrade to it.

Intel Core 2 duo is sufficient processor-wise - Snow Leopard only works on Intel-based Macs, which yours is. How much RAM have you got though - as indicated in TeenTitan's earlier post go to the Apple menu (top left of the menu bar) and select 'About this Mac' and it'll tell you how much RAM is installed. 1gb of RAM is enough but more would be better.

That was more like an ad.....

And, Paul already answered your other question - I agree with him re. the RAM; make at 2 GB (or more if your machine can support it).
