Double quote "special character" mode

Double quote "special character" mode

When I press the double quote key, for some reason OSX enters "special character entry mode" (for want of a better term). It turns the next character I type into a non-ASCII character - for example, double quote -> e is ë, etc. I guess it's some kind of language-compatibility mode. My question is, how do I turn it off?

Mac Mini, Mac OS X (10.6.5)

Go to system preferences/language & text/input sources and make sure that you have the box for US International PC unchecked.

I give demerits to Apple for making this the default

I think normally the only way to have that as the default is for the person setting up the software for the first time to deliberately choose it instead of the standard default, which is "US". But sometimes these things also do change randomly.

Thanks, that did it, although I give demerits to Apple for making this the default and making changing it verrrry sneaky.
