iMac 27" running very slow after 10.6.6 update

After updating to the newest OSX build my iMac is running extremely slow. Boot times are the same but once I'm in OSX it takes twice as long to do anything. If I click on the systems icon it takes over 10 seconds to open. I attempted to verify my hard drive permissions and it shows an estimated time of over 4 hours. I'm at a lost as to what the **** happened. I've run several hardware diagnostics and it finds no problems. I also have boot camp installed and Windows 7 runs perfectly. Has anyone experienced something like this with the 10.6.6 build?

Hi E-nun

Unfortunately my Imac was bought on the 4th Jan 2010. I bought Apple Care before christmas but due to the holidays didn't receive the pack until after new year. I have sent them an Email to reactivate my Imac so that i am able to activate but they haven't got back to me yet. So i think that may be out of the question unfortunately.

I am now using my macbook pro (without update) and wont be updating until this is sorted first. Im also glad im not the only one having the problems.

21.5" mid 2010, updated and running just fine, I don't think its the update alone, I don't use windows on my Mac, and have noticed no slow down, no issues and its just as fast as before, I didn't use the combo update, I just unplugged everything from my USB ports etc ran a disc and permissions check, installed, ran the checks again and rebooted. Shut the machine down connected everything up and its been running fine since. Maybe its related to parallels but I would not say its a fault with every Mac, this always happens with new releases, and people (no offence and I hope your mac gets sorted) but people blame the update so often when its their Mac or its installation. Did you create a new user account to test your OS?

I never use Onynx or any of those tools and my mac runs fine. Sometimes I wonder if tinkering can be the cause of issues that come to light with an update. I have several friends with the 27" iMacs who also have no issues and friends with the 24" older version as well. I would say its safe to update as this forum would be filled with thousands of posts if there was a major issue. I hope you get your problem sorted soon but to blame the update I think is a bit premature.

Same problem here guys. Just installed 10.6.6 on Thursday (late 2009, 27" iMac, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB HD). Boots fine until login screen. Then for the next 4-5 minutes everything is in slow motion and the hard drive is seeking like crazy... Takes 30 secs to launch Firefox, 10 secs to lauch System Preferences, etc... Everything is back to normal in about 4-5 mintues.

I tried a few things, and called Apple Care and they had me try a few things. In no particular order, here's what I tried:

1. PRAM reset
2. SMC reset
3. Cleared all login items
4. Cleared all caches
5. Created a Test User account (no change using another account)
6. Hardware test (no HD problems detected)
7. Safe Mode (works), but regular mode doesn't work with all caches, login items, etc cleared
8. Tried leaving computer running for several hours (didn't help)
9. Tried many, many reboots (no help)
10. Tried 10.6.6 combo update (no help)
11. Fixed Disk Permissions (no help)
12. HD Defrag (I'm a Windows Expat afterall)

Next step, re-install then take 10.6.6 combined update. Not looking forward to that one. Maybe tomorrow if I have the energy...

Let me know if you guys figure out anything easier, Apple Care doesn't have any answers (re-installing OSX is not really an answer).

Cheers,
Dave

Update: I downloaded and installed the 10.6.6 combined update then booted into safe mode, verified and repaired permissions and restarted. Once I booted into normal mode I just left the iMac alone for about 20 minutes. After I came back everything was running fine... no lag, no slowness. Just to test I launched Parallels 6 and booted into a Windows 7 VM. It worked perfectly and ran as fast as ever. I'll keep testing and report back if things go back to the way they were.

More info... I ran the following in terminal "sudo fs_usage -f filesys" and noticed that the hard drive is being hammered at bootup running the "getattrlist" command (control c to break out of this). My iMac runs like a dog until this process ends (which takes several minutes). I'm no Mac expert but it doesn't seem right that this is happening every time I boot up. Can anyone shed like on this situation?

Hi guys,

i am on a MBP 2,66 Core i7 and my mac is also awfully slow after the update. QucikTime movies don´t play smoothly anymore. The whole graphics seem very slow. My MacPro, which is still on 10.6.5 and my other MBP (also on 10.6.5) are fine. In my case, a complete shut down (not restart) and boot solves the issue for a couple of hours. Then it´s back to slow again. Even typing this message is a pain, as the letters appear with seconds in delay... Any help would be appreciated. Diskrepair didn´t help.
Thanx

Hey guys, I am typing this post on my MB white (mid 2010). I have recently updated to OS X 10.6.6 and I have no problems at all. Everything running just as fine as before software update. I don't know bout you guys but i have no problems or what so ever with 10.6.6. I think you should book a genius appointment at apple's website.

Bye
~Daniel

Hi Enun

Can you test something for me? Turn the iMac off the switch it on again, the literally give the imac say 10-15secs to load then click straight on the spotlight icon (top right) to see if the spinning beach ball comes straight away.

Mine does this. Even though i am able to select any file on the desktop or open a program. Its got to be to do with Spotlight im sure of it. Only problem is i use this all the time, constantly.

Just thought it would be good to see if it happens on your iMac.
