    I went to the genus bar yesterday, I told them my lock button was stuck and they took it to the back to run diagnositics. They came back out and said that because my iPhone 4s was 3 weeks out of my 1 year warranty I had two options. For $199 I could get another iPhone 4s or for $199 (and a contract update) I could get an iPhone 5. I differed and said I would think about it.


    Right now I am using the accesability option on my phone to lock and turn off my phone that way but that little orb is annoying and taking up valuble screen realestate. Should I drop the money and get an iPhone 5 or just try to live with my 4S like this for another year?

    I would try going to another Apple Store or back to the same one and plead with the genius bar manager.  Another post on this thread mentioned that they were out of warranty but got a free replacement as the genius manager had the discretion to replace within 45 days out of warranty.


    If that fails, you could try trading in the phone for money/store credit.  Apple does it online, but you may have better luck at a Radio Shack or other store where they might not notice the broken power button.  You can get up to $220 for a 4S in perfect condition.  Why let Apple screw you when you can pass the screwing onto someone else?


    You can also try to get the button fixed at a 3rd party shop, I saw one online that charges $60.


    My 4S was 10 days out of warranty when the power button failed out of the blue, never dropped the phone, was in perfect condition.  Genius Bar was no help.  They admitted that their customer service policy changed in the past year so that they can save money, in other words, make more money off of customers who don't spend an extra $100 for apple care within 30 days of the original purchase.  The genius bar called me for a follow up a week later saying that Apple Engineering was aware of the manafacturing defect in the power button, but deemed it not within their policy guidelines to replace if out of warranty.  I'm still wondering why they called me just to tell me I was screwed for a second time.  I wonder if this would still be the case if Steve Jobs was still alive.


    I've been on assistive touch for about a month now and it blows, especially on a plane, since you can't turn your phone back on unless your seat has USB or a power socket.  Sometimes I'll forget to go through the steps of locking the screen, and my phone will stay on in my pocket, draining the battery.  I'm going to try the genius bar one more time citing the 45 day policy and if that doesn't work, I'm done with iPhones.  I'm going to trade in for an Android.  I don't trust Apple anymore if they can't stand by a product to work after a year of normal use.  I'm not giving into their Apple Care profit scheme.

    To whom this may concern,


    I have an issue with my lock button, it doesn't work. I've only had this phone for a little over a year and this happens. I attempted to have it repaired but it would have been done at a cost. Frustrated with this I turned to the internet where I have found numerous people this issue. I'm SHOCKED that a recall hasn't been done. This lack of recognition makes me question Apples loyalty to customers. If this issue isn't rectified in the near future I'll be looking to other manufacturers to replace Apple products that I have in my home.

    except this isnt an app they install at the apple store. its available under settings under accessibility to anyone. and i think the best fix is to not drop the phone...

    Regardless of if it's a design or manufacturing error, it looks to me to be a real Rube Goldberg design. When I pay the price I paid for my iPhone 4s, I expect it to work for more than 14 months. I'm a Six Sigma Blackbelt, and while I know that most of you don't know what that is, take my word that this is a very poor example of customer support from a company that I expected more from. I also know as many people with the problem as without. Small sample size, but I think that a 50% defect rate. This WILL be my last Apple product.

    Today the power button on my iPhone 4 stopped working. Luckily, the phone is on. I am meticulous about the care of my phone. It has never been dropped or out of the protective case that I've had it in since I purchased it two years ago. After reading all the posts about this obvious design problem, I am disheartened that Apple won't recognize the deffect and offer to fix or replace the phones. A phone should last longer than 2 years! I have been a loyal Apple customer since 1990. My business and home computers are Macs. This is the first time I have been disappointed in Apple's response to an obvious defect in product design. Shame on you Tim Cook! Steve must be turning over in his grave. Apple has enough cash on hand to address this issue to keep your loyal customers happy. It's time to step up and take the high road.

    That is exactly what happened to me tonight: on/off button is stuck in the pressed position and when I met w/ a 'genius' who told me b/c my 4S was past the 1 yr warranty coverage, it would be $199 to repair. To **** with that! I've been a loyal purchaser of Apple products but it seems every one of them has had a defect: my shuffle doesn't hold a charge past 15 mins, my iPod and MacBook Pro also don't hold a battery charge, and now this! I'm now waiting for my iPad to 'surprise' me w/ a defect (my money is on the battery). **** w/ Apple, if this is what I can expect from paying a premium for their products, I'll go over to Android and take my chances w/ their less costly products.

    Add me to the growing list of iPhone 4 users with a broken power/sleep button. I took it to the Apple store and (like everyone else who is out of warranty has said) was given the option of getting a replacement for $150. I said "No thanks" and have been using Assistive Touch instead. I treat my phone with such care so it's very disappointing to have this happen! Even the guy at the Apple store said it happens to tons of people!

    An updatate to my previous post:


    I was just called by my local Apple store genus bar manager. He apoligized for the inconvience and told me he would be happy to grant me a one time exception. In short, I go in on thursday to get a new iPhone.


    Very pleased with the responce by Apple.

    Same issue here in Brazil with an iPhone 4S. Button stuck. Apple is disgusting!!! Will certainly not get the iPhone 5 but rather a Samsung!!!

    I have this same problem right now and my ipod is off warrenty already so i cant trade it in for a new ipod. What should i do?

    You might try to take it to a repair shop - there are many of them that will do the work at a reasonable cost. Just make sure you check the reviews. Also, check to see if you bought it with a credit card that has a warranty extension program. Mine doubles them, making it two years for Apple products. 


    Also, this sounds like a seperate issue from the iPhone 4/4S issue. I haven't heard of too many iPods with the same Sleep/Wake button issue (though, it's possible).

    I've joined the growing clan of non-working sleep buttons.  Like many others, I had a visit at the "genius" bar last night, only to be told my phone was just out of warranty.  But not to worry, I could give them this phone for a refurb model for only $199.00!  This is TERRIBLE customer service.  You build a crappy product, charge a load of money for it, and then charge another load of money to fix it. 


    I guess what really gets me angry is that they repair all of these "non-repairable" phones and then turn around and sell them again!  This should be criminal. 


    I have purchased 7 iphones for my family and me since they first came out.  This is my last one.  Hello Samsung, I'm glad to meet you!

    My iphone has recently had this problem, I read alternatives in the comments on this post and turned on the accesibility mode thing... I used it once and i am now stuck with the big panel on my screen, not the tiny one in the corner, the big one that has "voice control" "device" "home" and "favourites" on it.. anyone know how to get rid of it... I can't obviously turn my phone off and back on as the lock button is no longer working... quite p***** off to be honest. I have tried to take the sim out but this done nothing, for the time being I'm just playing music to try and run the battery down, which may take a good hour as I have just fully charged the **** thing. Any help that can be given would be much appreciated, thanks.
