Surround sound with apple tv

How do I connect my surround sound to apple tv 2?
I have a JVC tv and a LG DVD player with surround sound. I can't seem to find anywhere to put the optical cable into the DVD player. And theres only one HDMI output on my TV.
thanks in advance.

Sam,

Can you give us a little more information? You say your DVD player has "surround sound" but I am not sure what that means. Do you hook speakers directly to the DVD player? In other words, is it one of those all-in-one home theater units? With most DVD players, there needs to be something else to decode the Dolby digital data and convert it to signals that drive speakers to provide sound. This could possibly be the TV, or a surround sound receiver. Myself and I suspect most people here use a surround sound receiver with multiple optical inputs for cable box, DVD/Blu-ray player, Apple TV and whatever else we have.

Also, by "HDMI output" do you mean "HDMI input"? If so, I assume the Apple TV is connected to that input on your TV, no?

I think that should work ok.I have a Sony DVD blu ray 5.1 and a app tv 2 I have the hdmi cable attached to the tv and the optical cable plugged into the Sony DVD and it works perfectly, now depending if I have the Sony switched off I can stil get the sound coming from the tv if I want maybe late at night when I don't want to disturb the neibours next door , if I then switch the Sony DVD on the sound then comes from the Sony DVD 5.1 I think I need to get a optical splitter so I can have normal tv running through the Sony if there is such a thing on the Market
