How to disable audio resampling to 48 kHz?

Hi there,
I wanted to know if it's possible to disable the resampling every audio content (mostly 44.1 kHz files) to 48 kHz when playing via AirPlay or the share feature from a computer's media library.

Maybe a future software update?

Thanks and regards!

Hey, for what it's worth I cannot hear any difference between a bit perfect 44.1 sample rate and a resampled 48kHz one running through the apple tv (gen 2). I have a cheap (~$150) DAC with two TOSLINK inputs and I hooked one up to the apple tv and the other to my computer. Then I set iTunes to play the same song at the same time to each TOSLINK input. I was flipping back and forth and could hear no difference at all. If I wasn't pressing the buttons myself I would never have known when the DAC was switching between the two input sources. I am pretty neurotic about this sort of thing and the resampling is a total non-issue now that I've tested it for myself.

The audio was all apple lossless files ripped from CDs. As a caveat I didn't test this on a high-end stereo--just some nice headphones and computer speakers (both in the $100-150 range). But I should have been able to hear SOMETHING if the resampling was leaving significant artifacts.

I quite agree.

It's a bizarre upsampling multiple when iTunes Store Music and the majority of imported music (from CD) will be 44.1 kHz source. If it was bumping to 88.2 kHz ok but should still be an option, but with 44.1>48 kHz most of the samples will be interpolated not original.

Many won't care, won't here any difference etc but I don't want it mucking around with the audio in unpredictable ways.

If AppleTV 2 was allowing 48 kHz/88.2 kHz/96 kHz/192 kHz 16 or 24 bit audio to be played back in addition to CD quality specs fine, but it doesn't, and that's a real shame as it could be a competitor to the expensive audiophile streaming options I suspect at a fraction of the price.

Well, some may care but none will hear a difference. Some may convince themselves that they do hear a difference but that doesn't make it true. I also wish the atv2 didn't downsample my hi-res files, because there is an audible difference, albeit one most folks won't notice or care about. But upsampling the CD rips is not hurting anything. I just tested it and there was no audible difference at all, not even a minor one.

And seriously, this is not a matter of principle. We are talking about a $99 home a/v product. I don't know why they made it upsample lossless CD rips. But the only reason to care is if it was making a difference that you could detect with those two pieces of hardware attached to either side of your head.
