frozen screen - black with apple logo

my iphone has frozen and when i reset using home and power buttone the apple logo fades and comes back but still will not boot up, when i connect to itunes it appears to show and sync but the screen on the phone stay the same where normally it would light up and show syncing.
i have tried the restore methods but no joy, as the phones 18 months it out of warranty, and cluse as to how this can be fixed and how much it would cost?

bump, same problem, just randomly has faulted and gone to a black screening continuously showing the apple logo fading in and out.

Try this. Hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons at the same time, about 10 seconds. This is a hard reset of IPhone. The home button is the round one under your screen. The sleep-button is the small metallic button on the top of the phone to the right. Wait 20 seconds and press the sleep-button to restart your phone as usual. It will take a while until it starts up. Hope this will do.

Having the same problem. In addition, the battery level does funny things. At one point, my battery showed around 50% level. I plugged it in, and the percentage immediately jumped to 70%. Odd.

If I hold the power button, it will sometimes reset. It doesn't necessarily turn off, but will flash the home screen, go dark, and then when I hit the home button again it shows the home screen.

The other way that I have found to unfreeze it is to simply plug it in. Fortunately, I'll be ready to upgrade soon...maybe iPhone 5 will be out.
