Black screen Asking for password?

Recently I was using my ibook and suddenly the screen went black. I tried to restart and after observing the unit trying to log on it kicked out to a black screen. The screen is completely dark black and says the following: darwin/bsd (nonamecomputer.local) (console) Below this heading it asks for a password. I have tried every possible password I have ever used and nothing. Any suggestion or help would be gratefully appreciated! Thank you.

Sounds like it's booting into single user mode or console mode. The problem is it's not accepting your password. It should ask for a user name first, and after you enter the password say, "Welcome to Darwin" then you can type reboot and hopefully it will reboot normally.

You can try a forced shutdown and restart while holding the Command-Option-P-R keys. This will flash the P-RAM. Hold down the keys until you hear the chime a second time. You can also try just holding down the option key on startup to select a volume to boot from.

Okay I understand the problems now.

1. Your computer is stuck in console mode.
2. Your computer was automatically logging in and now you don't remember the password or even login name.

First thing I would try is the good old reset PRAM and NVRAM. This article explains that: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379

Also, if you have the 10.4 install disk, try booting from that by holding down the C key and inserting that into the drive. From there you can do quite a bit, like run Disk Utility and inspect and repair the hard drive for problems, change the password, or even re-install the software. Just be sure not to erase and install, unless you want the drive wiped.

This article explains resetting the password from a disk: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274

Let us know if any of that helps.

Again, have you tried starting up in OS X by holding down the x key as the startup chime is ending. (There is a small chance that this could work.)

You could try starting up in Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.

If this works you will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?

Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.

See if you are able to do a little hard drive maintenance to help things out.

I suspect that it may be your hard drive which is acting up.

Thank you for your help. The screen is black and like I said it isn't asking for a user name. It simple says Darwin/bsd (nonamecomputer.local) (console) then it asks for password. I am charging the battery now to get a full charge and then I will be better able to see and learn what it is doing. Thanks so much again. Maybe once it is all charged and good to go we can chat on the phone?? I know that sounds silly but I am more comfortable having someone walk me through these steps. What are your thoughts on that?

Sincerely,
Robert Piche

thats exactly what mine says knife! Only a little different Hers is letter for letter/ word for word:

DARWIN/BSD (NONAMECOMPUTER.LOCAL) (CONSOLE) Not in caps though. And login: right below it. I have never had to login though, or if I did it was so long ago I can't remember the login ID. Is there any way to bypass the login or change the login to a new ID so I can login??? Thank you so much for continuing to assist me!

I followed the reset directions you provided me. First difference was that while holding those keys the start up chime came on. It hadn't been prior to that, Then it stayed with the loading wheel spinning for about 3-4 minutes. It then went to the blue desktop screen, the loading wheel again was visible and then all at once the screen turned black. I tapped the mouse pad etc to see if the puter was still on or had shut down or went to sleep or something. The screen did not light back up it remained dark. I have done it again to see what happens with the black screen if I do not interfere by touching a key. I will let you know what happens as soon as I can determine if this is gonna fix my trouble. Thank you.

Let me ask you this knife...I have owned this mac for 3-4 years and have never replaced the battery. Is it possible that a dead or insufficiently charging battery could cause this types of problems?? When I press the little test button on the bottom it only has one green light. And this is after it has been charging all day. Is it possible a weak battery has caused everything to go haywire??
