Want to install OS 9.2.2 on Ti 1Ghz, but lost software restore disks!!

I'm trying to install OS 9.2.2 on my 1Ghz Ti PowerBook, but have lost my original "Software restore" disks so in a spot of bother.
So far i've been able to use my Tiger install disk to run disk utility and totally erase the hard drive and to install the needed OS 9 drivers.
I then tried to install a retail version of OS 9.2.1 , by holding down the "C" key to boot from the disk, but during boot up I get a "error type 11". I'm told to retry and to switch off extensions to get rid of the error 11, but still no luck.
I've done a web search and it seems that ONLY OS 9.2.2 will install on the Ti 1Ghz (hence why my retail 9.2.1 won't install) and that a retail version of 9.2.2 still won't work, as it MUST be from the "Software restore" disks that came with the Ti PowerBook. The disk had two white dots on it I think..
Problem is I've a nasty feeling i through out my "software restore" disk, and i can't find it anywhere.
So any ideas on how I can install 9.2.2 on my PowerBook or where to get the needed "Software restore" disk from?
(ive seen one Mac spare place in the US have it in stock, but im not paying the $99 they're asking for it !!!!! <COUGH!!!!!> )

I don't want to run Classic, I just want the PowerBook to only have OS 9.2.2 installed. No OSX

In 2011, you (I think) helped a mac user with a 1GHz Tibook installer disc (#691-4316-A) for his vintage Powerbook.

I hope it did because I could use the same one! I've inherited a 1GHz Tibook (version 3,5) that doesn't have the Powerbook Software Install for OS9. I tried at least to clone the disk for a backup, and for the first time it asked for a password. So I can't back it up. If you still have that disk, I could use a copy of it to try!

Been looking around the forum and it seems i need disk with Apple part number 691-4316-A
Powerbook G4 15 Inch
Software Install and Restore
Mac OS X version 10.2.3
Mac OS version 9.2.2
DVD version 1.0

ONLY this disk will install OS 9.2.2 on a 1Ghz Ti PowerBook..... problem is the disk is RARE!!!!!

So if anyone can help out please message me. Im in the UK.

It's true that no other disc will do, so if you MUST have a bootable OS 9.2.2, you may have to spring for that disc you turned up in the USA. Make darn sure it has the right part number before you pay.

I only need to install OS 9.2.2 so I can compare midi timing of Logic 5 on OS9, compared to timing on Logic Pro 9 on my MBP. .... long story but it's a musician techy thing 😉

No way i'm paying $99 to run an experiment!!!!

It's a long shot, but you can call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a fee, a replacement set of system discs (if available), can be ordered.

However, the discs will be for the original version of OS, that was pre-installed, when the Mac was manufactured.

Is the Powerbook a FW400 or FW800 model?

My TiBook FW400 1 GHz came with

691-4060-A

MacOS Version 10.2.1
MacOS Version 9.2.2
DVD Version 1.0

It's got one FW400 port on it. I copied the 691-4316-A number from another thread, but perhaps even 691-4060-A works too.
Seems 4316-A has OSX 10.2.3, and your disc has 10.2.1, but both discs have the needed OS 9.2.2

Are you able to help me please?

Confirmed. And for anyone else who comes across this thread in the future, Apple have none in stock. Just called them, but with no luck of instock disks.

I guess my question is, is this just an academic question or are you able to get either of these discs? If you are able to get an install disc with 9.2.2 on it, read on. OS 9 (iirc, it's been a long time) was more tolerant of "drag and copy" type installations, so I'm thinking if you install 9.2.2, it's going to be 9.2.2, no matter which disc you get ahold of. I certainly wouldn't bet my life on it, but that's my recollection. To get a more expert opinion, head over to the the OS 9 forum and post. If you're lucky, Don Archibald will be around, and I'm pretty sure he can give you a solid answer. Good luck.

The 1GHz Tibook was shipped with 10.2.1 early in its production run and 10.2.3 later in the run, and a special build of 9.2.2 throughout. I don't know the part number of the disc that contains 10.2.1, but it sounds like that's the one Old Comm Guy has. Whether it would start a machine that came with 10.2.3 on it, I'm not sure.

It's easy to copy an OS 9.2.2 Syatem Folder from another machine to gain Classic support (to run OS 9 apps in OS X), but if I remember correctly, only the model-specific 9.2.2 build that was shipped with the 1GHz Tibook is able to boot that machine into OS 9. There never was any retail 9.2.2 disc at all.

Having no luck in finding the disks, but i have found install disks for the PowerBook "Ivory" 667mhz + 800mhz.
These disks contain OS 10.1.4 and OS 9.2.2.

Anyone want to hazard a guess as to if this will work to install OS 9.2.2 on the Ti 1Ghz?

That disc can only be booted into OS X 10.1.4 (not 9.2.2) to run the installations that are available on it, and your later Tibook can't boot into that version. So you won't be able to use the disc exactly as it's designed to be used. But since you already have OS X installed, you don't need to boot from the DVD, and maybe you can use the disc after booting normally from your hard drive.

If you insert that disc into your Tibook with the machine already running and double-click the OS 9.2.2 installer package on the DVD, perhaps it will run, and perhaps the resulting 9.2.2 installation will boot your Tibook. I wouldn't bet a lot of money on this, because your model may require OS 9.2.2 components that aren't included in the build that came with the earlier model. But if you're willing to pay whatever is being asked for the disk and take a chance on it, maybe you'll get what you need.

On the other hand, if there isn't a big difference in price between that disc and the one you mentioned earlier, the other one may be a better bet — especially if you can confirm that it has the right part number printed on it.

So how exactly does the OS 9.2.2 installation work then?
How would you install and boot from OS 9.2.2 with only OS 9.2.2 on the HD?
I was under the impression you'd insert the SW restore disk, and then it lets you choose to install either OSX or OS9?
From your post it seems this is incorrect, and you have to first install OSX, then install OS 9.2.2. Then select OS 9 as your start up disk. The once in OS 9.2.2, manually delete all OSX folders etc.
Is the above description the only was to install and only have OS 9.2.2 on the HD?

At the moment my HD on the Ti 1Ghz is completely erased and the lowest version OSX install disk i do have is OSX 10.4 Tiger.

Ah — I hadn't gone back and reread the whole thread to refresh my memory before putting up my last post, so I was thinking OS X was already installed on your hard drive. If that's not the case, then yes, you will have to install OS X before you can install OS 9, because the installer application on the DVD (which is used to install both OS X and OS 9) is itself an OS X-based application. To use the installer on the DVD for any purpose, you must boot the computer into OS X from the DVD, from its internal hard drive, or from an external hard drive. If you have a bootable OS X external drive, that might be ideal, because then you wouldn't have to be able to boot from the DVD, nor would you have to install Tiger on the Tibook's internal drive only to delete it later.

Now, having said all that, let me mention that I've just burned and tested a bootable duplicate of my own 1GHz Tibook installer disc (#691-4316-A), and I'll be happy to mail it to you if you'll allow your email address to show in your Discussions profile temporarily so we can start a private correspondence. I'll let you know as soon as I've noted the address so you can hide it again.
