I have a 15-inc Macbook Pro from mid 2010, and am experiencing the same issues described in
this article. The problem is, whenever I download and try to use the update, it says that it's not supported on my system. My computer will randomly freeze and crash, especially when running Safari, and the problem has only surfaced in the past week.
Any thoughts?
First run Software Update and see if your system needs the EFI update mentioned in the link you provided. If Software Update recommends it does follow the on-screen instructions, if it doesn't recommend it your system probably already has the update.
Although you may be having similar symptoms it may have a totally different cause. After you resolved whether your system needs the update then you can begin troubleshooting your issue. You mentioned this occurs "especially when running Safari, and the problem has only surfaced in the past week." If that is the case you should Reset Safari. How you do that is Safari - Reset Safari - Choose all the options and reset it. If that doesn't fix it either then take a look if you have added any new software including Safari extensions and remove that app. If that still isn't the case please post back with any troubleshooting steps you have taken so we have a starting point.
I've already reset Safari twice, and Software Update says everything is up to date. Haven't installed any new programs either, it kind of just came out of the blue. If it makes a difference, the crash is random most of the time, but is guaranteed on Politico.com or Minecraft.net.
I'd recommend trying to do boot in Safe Mode, this will clear out some caches. It's possible that a cache related to those two sites may have become corrupted. The following Apple Advice letter will give you instructions on Safe Mode.
