Mpeg Streamclip, avi to mov but no image only sound

I've recently obtained a a device to capture footage from VHS onto the computer but only on windows computers. The footage outputs as AVI file format. I would like to edit it on my mac in final cut pro so have brought the files to my mac and am trying to convert them to MOV with mpeg streamclip but when I export and play in quicktime there is only sound and no image. I've also tried to export to MPEG but it does the same. How do I fix this in mpeg streamclip? or is there another way I can get the video footage into final cut pro?

Thanks

Mac OS X (10.5.8)

AVI isn't a format; it's a container. The video and audio streams contained within could be made from any number of codecs ... perhaps the codec needed to play the file properly isn't installed on your Mac.

Try downloading the Perian package: http://www.perian.org/

Afterward, see if the file will play properly in QuickTime Player or MPEG Streamclip. If so, your problem is solved. If not, you really need to start over and capture the VHS footage on your Mac. Or convert the footage on your Windows system so they will play on your Mac.

I've also tried to export to MPEG

If you want to edit in Final Cut, do NOT export to any MPEG format.
