HDD Speed Test

Hello,

Quite a simple question, anybody know of any software that checks the speed of your HDD. Something equivalent to CrystalDisk Mark for windows.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Thank you,
Neil Watson

Ha ha, thanks for that I needed a laugh.

SSD's are not subject to speed. Oh my god, I am literally rolling around on the floor laughing my * off. Any storage, be it Solid State, Hard Disk, Fibre Attached or USB Pen Drive is subject to transfer speeds.

Please, never speak to me again.

Anybody else know of a good bench mark tool for HDD/SDD's that runs on the MAC? I'm just interested to see what my SSD is getting over my 70MBs read and write HDD in my old laptop.

Way to come off like a total ******. His answer was actually not too far off base. He did not say that speed was not a factor, but that HDD speed test was not appropriate. In your case, you at least recovered enough of your good manners to explain your objective further.

xbench is included in your applications/utilities folder, and will give you the basics on your SSD performance. It will also list the metrics of the tests so that you should be able to do a comparison. You will find the differences quite dramatic versus your older mechanical hard drive.

Try and maintain a civil tone in your posts, and you will find lots of folks here willing to help you. The reason your post sat for a few hours with no answers was probably due to the fact that nobody wanted to be subjected to another harsh response from you.

Thanks for the attitude re-adjustment Craig, appreciated. His answer is way off base and you know it, at the very least miserably unhelpful. My response my be seen as harsh and more than likely unjustified, however, people that post complete non-sense for over 1000 posts are more than irritating.

The reason that my post went unanswered is, from what i can see, there isn't any such software other than xbench. The only other i found was http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/20482/disk-speed-bench/ , which pales in comparison to a slightly haphazard xbench.
Yes the differences are dramatic, which can be felt through normal use. Xbench showed 186 Read and 150 write.

It is a shame there isn't a more in-depth test i can run just to see the results, like I say CrystalMark for Windows is a good piece of software.

PS. Read my post again, i was never once rude to the other poster, unfortunately within the first sentence you managed to hurl insults. Please practice what you preach. Nonetheless, thank you for your constructive response.

I think I have exhausted my search now, I only managed to find 3
http://www.xbench.com/
http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Utilities/HD-Speed-Test.shtml
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/20482/disk-speed-bench/

Hope this helps somebody else out.

I was a bit disappointed with my overall speed which averaged out at about 140-160 read and write, although it is the fastest storage device I have in my home.

Blackmagic Disk Speed Test - That is the one many use for comparison. I use it to check all my hard drives and SSDs, so you don't have to continue that debate. Blackmagic Disk Speed Test will work with both, and with RAIDs. It is used in the video industry because pro digital video editing is very sensitive to storage speed; Blackmagic makes professional video equipment.
