Transfer music from external hard drive to iTunes for Windows

Hi when i try to put music into i tunes from an external hard drive it copies it & when i disconnect the ex hard drive although it is showing in the i tunes music library it says it csnnot find the files. The reason is i am transfering my i tunes music from an old desk top running Win XP to a new lap top running Win 7.
